  1. Chapter 6: On the Range By: Alex McDaniel and Madison Connor

  2. Author’s Intent • The author’s intent of this chapter is to inform the readers of the struggles a rancher faces as businessmen. • He wants them to realize that being a rancher/farmer is very stressful as the farmers have hardly any control concerning the price they get for their stock. • He also intends to inform the readers on the impact of the chicken business on the cattle ranchers. • He wants his readers to know this as well as the pressure and threats Colorado ranchers get from wealthy business owners. • He also informs the readers of the ingredients in McDonalds chicken nuggets.

  3. Major Assertions • The author revealed that McDonalds controls most of the meat packing plants. • He furthermore discovered that McNuggets are made of chicken, but it is flavored with beef. • Also that McNuggets contain twice as much fat per ounce than a burger. • Moreover he found that there are four major cattle buying businesses and they are all together making sure prices stay the lowest they can making the ranchers pressured for money. • Finally author finds that the big businesses surrounding the ranchers are threatening them and their practice.

  4. Did the author successfully prove his point? • I believe the many points in this chapter were all fully proven. • The author describes to an extent the current hardships of poultry farmers and beef farmers. • Also that McDonald’s made a huge difference in America’s diet. • And that big businesses do come together as one to save themselves money and break the contributors to their business.

  5. Author Bias • The author doesn’t seem to be biased to either side: farmers or fast food. • He seems to be more factual. In the chapter it states, “McNuggets tasted good, they were easy to chew, and they appeared healthier than all of the other items on the menu at McDonald’s. After all, they were made out of chicken. But their health benefits were illusory.”

  6. Relevance of Material • The chapter talked about how farmer’s beef and poultry is used to make the food that we eat at fast food restaurant like McDonald’s. • Whenever we go to McDonald’s we don’t usually think about what’s in our food. • From now on we will know what we are eating in McDonalds food and maybe be a bit more cautious in what we eat from there.
