Waterborne Strategic Research Agenda Key Priorities (1) • Safe, sustainable and efficient waterborne transport • Synergy of safety + security through Goal/Risk Based Design • Towards the „zero ship accidents“ target • The „crashworthy vessel“ • „Low emission“ vessels and waterborne activities • Enhanced waterborne security 16 Sub-Priorities ~ 60 Topics The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda

  10. Waterborne Strategic Research Agenda Examples:Safety Topics (1) • Safe, sustainable and efficient waterborne transport • Synergy of safety + security through Goal/Risk Based Design • Implementing Risk Based Regulation and Approval • e.g. Analysis and Feedback from Accidents (database) • Implementing Risk Based Design • e.g. Design Methods, Benchmark Probabilistic Design Tools The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda

  11. Waterborne Strategic Research Agenda Examples: Safety Topics (2) • Safe, sustainable and efficient waterborne transport • Towards the „zero ship accidents“ target • Improving Vessel Usability and Maintainability • e.g. Man-Machine Interfaces, Intelligent Maintenance, Advanced Lashing and Cargohandling • New Systems and Procedures for Safe Waterborne Operations • e.g. Operation of Ultra Large Cruise Ships, Fail Safe Propulsion and Maneuvering, Cost Effecient Redundancy Strategy, Shore Based Guidance and Support • Enhanced Vessel Operations under Severe Conditions • e.g. Survivability, Robust Ship Design and Equipment The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda

  12. Waterborne Strategic Research Agenda Examples:„Green“ Topics • Safe, sustainable and efficient waterborne transport • Low emission Vessels and Waterborne Activities • Minimizing Airborne Emissions • e.g improved fuel treatment, novel propulsion (FC,LNG) • Cost effective Wastemanagement + Ballastwater Treatment • e.g. waste management, marinisation of landbased methods • Minimizing Noise, Wash and Vibration • „Life Cycle Minimum Emissions“ and Environment Protection • e.g. Life cycle assessments, methods to combat pollution The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda

  13. Waterborne Strategic Research Agenda Examples:Security Topics • Safe, sustainable and efficient waterborne transport • Enhanced Waterborne Security • Monitoring and Data Logging • Simulation Support + Ident. of Vulnerability • Development of Efficient and Economically Viable Strategies, Equipment and Specialized Vessels The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda

Waterborne Strategic Research Agenda Key Priorities (2) • A competitive European waterborne industry • Innovative vessels and floating structures • Tools for accelerated innovation • Next generation ship and yacht production processes • Effective waterborne operations • Technologies for new and extended marine operations • Enhanced sub sea capability 17 Sub-Priorities ~ 65 Topics The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda

  15. Waterborne Strategic Research Agenda Key Priorities (3) • Manage growing trade volumes and changing patterns • Faster planning and implementation of ports and infrastructure facilities • More effective ports and infrastructure • Intelligent Transport Support Technologies, Integrated ICT solutions • Traffic management strategies 9 Sub-Priorities ~ 20 Topics The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda

  16. Waterborne Strategic Research Agenda Critical Enablers • Human Resources Base, Education and Training • Defending Intellectual Property (IPR) • Political Framework: Joint Initiatives and Level Playing Field The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda

  17. Waterborne Strategic Research Agenda Next Step: Implementation Plan (1) • Important: Should not be focused on EU-FP7 only ! • Should include all major R&D initiatives of the sector (disrespectable of the financing: private equity, national funding, regional funding, EU-funding) • Activitiy started May 2006, expected to be final draft 1Q2007 The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda

  20. Waterborne Strategic Research Agenda A Tool to Manage Innovation ? „The biggest enemy of innovations is the attempt to manage and forecast them or to put them on a time line !“ Vishva Dizit R&D Director of the BioTech Pioneer GENENTECH/USA • ….however: • a roadmap is beneficial for • mobilizing „funds and brains“ • creating maximal effect with tax payers money • monitoring and support The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda

  21. FP7: 2007-2013 Estimated Annual Average Funding Volume for „WATERBORNE“ FP7: 1nd row Priority Transport FP6: 2nd row Priority The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda

  22. FP7: 2007-2013 • Expected Role of the European Technology Platforms: • to be the Commission‘s prime advisor in EU-FP work program drafting and steering • e.g the FP7 „Transport Advisory Group“ should consist of ETP delegates only (which already represent all stakeholders!) • to assist the Commission officially in managing the FP • to be eligible to receive and discuss working paper drafts officially at the same time and position as e.g. the program committee • to help to overcome shortcomings in expert evaluators etc. The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda

  23. Interfaces to other EU-RDI Technology Areas: Environmental / Marine Research Transport Chains Intermodality Analysis and Laboratory Systems Equipment Ships Ships and Shipping Equipment and Infrastructure Exploration and Processing Systems Fisheries The WATERBORNE Strategic Research Agenda
