Languages programs • in-school programs both primary and secondary • (programs at primary level: Community Languages K-6, or Insertion classes through Co.As.It, or organised on an individual basis by the school) • Bilingual program: Italian Bilingual School in Sydney at Meadowbank and a bilingual program at Yarralumla PS in ACT • Saturday School of Community Languages • Open High School • Distance Education • NSW Community Languages Program (Saturday and afternoon schools)

Languages programs K-6 • There is no Languages KLA in the primary curriculum. • The study of languages is not compulsory at the primary school level. • The study of a language is an optional component of the HSIE KLA or may be included in the 20% of curriculum time available for ‘Additional Activities’. • Approximately 17% of primary schools offer a languages program. • 31 community languages are taught in 142 primary schools across the state in 2014. • 14 438 students learning Italian in 2013 in DEC schools. • (Data not available for non DEC schools)

  13. Languages programs 7-10 Since 1996, the study of one language has been mandatory for 100 hours in one year for students in Years 7-10. The 100 hour course is normally offered in Year 7 or Year 8 In Year 10 – NSW Record of Achievement (RoSA) from 2012. Approx 8 200 students studying Italian in DEC secondary schools in 2013

Languages programs 11-12 There are 3 different courses available to students in Years 11-12 for the Higher School Certificate: Beginners Course - Students beginning a language in Year 11 Continuers Course - students continuing a language from Years 9-10 Extension Course - students continuing a language from Years 9-10 and undertaking extended study

Saturday School of Community Languages • Offers students from government and non-government high schools the opportunity to study their background language if it is not available for study in their weekday school. • Operates on Saturdays during the school term in 16 centres located in Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle to approximately 3500 students. • 25 languages offered • There is 1 Saturday School centre that offers Italian • http://www.sscl.schools.nsw.edu.au/home • Key contact • Adelia Fuller • Principal

Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards BOSTES • develops syllabuses for all primary and secondary schools responsible for registration and accreditation of non-government schools • conducts examinations and grants certificates for the RoSA in Yr 10 and Higher School Certificate (HSC) in Yr 12 • grants recognition to schools outside NSW to teach SC and HSC. • Accreditation of teachers http://www.boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/

  20. NSW Italian Syllabus documents 2014 There are four syllabuses for Italian: Kindergarten to Year 10 Stage 6 Italian Beginners - Senior course – Years 11 and 12 Stage 6 Italian Continuers - Senior course – Years 11 and 12 Stage 6 Italian Extension - Senior course – Year 12 only

  22. Australian Curriculum: Languages The Board of Studies will follow its regular cycle of curriculum evaluation and review which will identify priorities for curriculum renewal. When a current syllabus or learning area is identified for renewal the Board will take the opportunity to incorporate Australian curriculum content. In all cases, all schools are required to implement current approved NSW Syllabuses until otherwise advised by the Board. The Board of Studies NSW will make policy decisions regarding implementing the curriculum in NSW schools. http://www.acara.edu.au/default.asp
