It is YOUR responsibility to get the bell work completed.

  7. Music is EVERYWHERE Music has been around since man’s earliest days Music can be heard in NATURE. WIND!

  8. When? Cavemen struck WOODEN STICKS and BLOCKS together to send MESSAGES. People in other countries such as AFRICA have special CHANTS or songs to be used for HEALING sick people.

  9. When? The NATIVE AMERICAN PEOPLE have special songs and DANCES used in different ceremonies. An example of a dance is the RAIN dance.

  10. When? Most of the early music of EUROPE which was written down was used for CHURCH SERVICES.

  11. When? Later, around 1600 in Europe, more and more music was written for DANCING or for KINGS in their courts.

  13. What is Music? Music is SOUND. Music can be LOUD or SOFT, HAPPY or SAD, HIGH or LOW. Music can be SUNG or played on an INSTRUMENT.

  14. What is Music? Music is RHYTHM. Rhythm makes music MOVE. Music can be FAST or SLOW. Music can be JUMPY or SMOOTH.

  15. What is Music? Music has MELODY. A melody is a TUNE that can be SUNG or WHISTLED, or HUMMED

  16. What is Music? There are all TYPES of music. There is serious music called SYMPHONIC music.

  17. What is Music? There is MUSICAL THEATER in which people TALK, SING, and ACT.

  18. What is Music? There is BALLET which is a story DANCED to MUSIC.

  19. What is Music? There is OPERA which is a play told only in music by SINGERS.

  20. What is Music? There is POPULAR music.

  21. What is Music? There is COUNTRY music, FOLK music, JAZZ music, BLUEGRASS music, HEAVY METAL music, CONTEMPORARY CHRISTIAN music… just to name a few.

Bring it to class every day. • Each composer will have their own power point. • We will take turns reading the fact sheets in class– you are responsible for filling in the blanks as they arise. • You may be asked to write some additional notes on your sheets.

  23. Johann Sebastian Bach JS Bach was born in Germany in 1685 and came from a family full of famous musicians.

  24. Both of Bach’s parents died within a year of each other before his tenth birthday. • He went to live with his brother who taught him to play the organ and before long, his career began to flourish.

  25. Although we know Bach as a famous composer, he was best known in his day as: • A skilled violinist • Organist • Harpsichordist Violin Sonata No. 1 in G minor (BWV 1001) in Bach's handwriting

  26. Baroque Bach lived during the ___________ era: • A term which describes the fancy and complex style of music and art produced around the late 1600’s and early 1700’s. • He wrote in all the popular musical forms of the day, depending on where he was working at the time.

  27. While working as a churchmusician he wrote many of his famous___________: cantatas • Long musical works to be played and sung during church services. • These works demonstrate his deep religious beliefs, which were a very important part of his life and music.

  28. When he was employed as a court musician, Bach wrote many beautiful instrumental works for his royal employers, including: • Sonatas • Suites • Concertos Commemorative statue of J.S. Bach in Leipzig

  29. Bach’s final job was working as Musical Director for the city of Leipzig: • Composing and directing music for four churches and two choirs. • Producing any music needed for special occasions.

  30. Despite his genius as a musician, Bach was a devoted family man. He had twenty children to two different wives. Towards the end of his life, Bach slowly lost his sight and died at the age of 65 of complications resulting from eye surgery. He left behind him a rich musical legacy which we can still enjoy today.

  32. Fun Fact: A recording of Bach’s music is floating in outer space! In 1977, the spacecraft Voyager 1 and 2 were launched to probe areas of outer space never before explored. On board was a “Golden Record,” a collection of the very best examples of human life and achievement, intended as a greeting to any form of life that may find it. Three recordings of Bach’s music were chosen to be included in this “Who’s Who” of human history.
