  2. What is Modern Art vs. Contemporary art? • Contemporary Art: Artworks created within approximately within the last 20 years • Modern Art: Artworks created between the late 1860’s and 1975 (approx) • So what happened in between? Post-modernism….a presentation for another time

Background • Monet’s Impression: Sunrise kick started the Modern Art movement • Art movement coincided with Industrial age • Invention of Photography impacted Modern art by taking away the artist role in documentation: freed artists to pursue creative aspects of medium/technique • Reflected the rapid changes in society…rapid changes in art movements • Dominant theory held that artworks needed to stay true to the inherent qualities of medium/technique
