  2. INTERVIEWING A two-way dialogue to: • convey your key strengths, marketable skills, and motivation to convince employer that you are the “right fit” for the position • determine if position meets your professional interests and goals and if the organization is the “right fit” for you

  3. WHAT DO INTERVIEWERS LOOK FOR? (source: NACE) • Applicable job-related skills • Communication skills (written and verbal) • Analytical and problem-solving skills • Team skills • Interpersonal skills • Organizational skills • Motivation and enthusiasm • Honesty, integrity, and work ethic • Adaptability • “Fit”

  4. PREPARATION Research the organization using: • its web site • articles online or in publications • web sites of competitor or orgs with similar missions/services/professional association sites • library reference area • web sites such as www.jobfind.com, www.rileyguide.com, www.bpl.org/research/kbb, www.idealist.org, www.devnetjobs.org

  5. PREPARATION cont. • information obtained from networking • any pertinent organizational literature and complete job description when possible Use this information to develop questions for the interviewer(s).

  6. PREPARATION cont. • Map out the route and take a trial run • Confirm time and room location • Know the interviewer(s)’ name(s)/title(s) • Arrive about 10 minutes early

  7. REMEMBER TO BRING… • Extra copies of your résumé • Copy of cover letter for your reference • Copy of job description • Business cards • Pad for taking notes • List of references (just in case)

  8. QUESTIONS TO EXPECT Prepare a response in advance to potential questions. Examples: “Tell me about yourself.” “Can you name one of your weaknesses?” “Talk about one of your accomplishments.” “What did you like most/least about your last job?”

  9. QUESTIONS TO ASK Develop a list of thoughtful questions to ask-examples: What was it about my résumé that attracted your attention? Could you describe a typical day in this position? How soon will you be making a decision? What’s your management philosophy? What qualifications do you think are most important for the person in this position?

  10. AT THE CONCLUSION… • Let them know you want the job! • Summarize your applicable skills • Ask what the next steps are or their timeline for concluding the search • Ask if you may call about status

  11. AFTER THE INTERVIEW • Send a thank-you letter within two days • Highlight your skills and notable aspects of discussion in thank-you letter • Call the interviewer about the hiring decision

  12. ATTIRE • Attend to grooming and personal hygiene • Wear conservative, professional clothing • Minimal accessories • No perfume, after shave • Minimal makeup

  13. BE MINDFUL OF… • Your handshake • Eye contact • Listening skills • Your body language • Image you’re projecting: consider clothing, carriage, speech, confidence level
