  7. Once you’re in there, it’s not about your credentials. It’s about what you do during the interview.

  8. And though there are many things that are important in an interview, there’s one thing you can do that’s more important than anything else.

  9. Is itKnowing the background of the interviewer?

  10. Is itConducting extensive research so that you know the company cold?

  11. Is itApproaching the interview as a non-threatening “informational interview?”

  12. Is itGetting intel about the types of openings and where you’d fit?

  13. Is itPresenting and selling your background and credentials in the most professional way possible?

  14. No!

  16. Asking great questions. Great operationally-oriented questions.

  17. Questions the answers to which would lead you to be a contributor right away.

  18. Like . . .

  19. “Can you tell me about the people who’ve done well at your firm?”

  20. “Can you tell me about the people who’ve struggled at your firm?”

  21. “What would be the biggest challenges someone would face in this position, and what would you recommend to someone approaching those challenges?”

  22. “If I were starting at your firm soon, what types of reference materials should be looking at right now to prepare?”

  23. Great questions show interest. They demonstrate intelligence.The answers will tell you where to focus your presentation.And asking them will show that it’s not about you.

  27. Don’t complain.

  28. Be a knowledge sponge. Study. Become an expert.

  29. Take a genuine interest in those who work for and with you. Act in their interest. Lead.
