The Cold War. Resentment. US upset that Russia did not allow Germany to come back together. Russia upset that US tried to give money to Easter European nations. Trust. Neither side trusted the other.   They were so different. Every action they took made them hate each other more.

  2. Resentment • US upset that Russia did not allow Germany to come back together. • Russia upset that US tried to give money to Easter European nations.

  3. Trust • Neither side trusted the other.   • They were so different. • Every action they took made them hate each other more. • Russia and US alliance came to an end.

  4. Yalta and Potsdam Conference • Agreement of what do with in post war Europe. • Stalin made promises at Yalta • Stalin backed out of promises at Potsdam • Soviet Union wanted more influence in Europe

  5. Atomic Bomb • Shifted who had the most power. • Truman’s attitude changes. • I have the most powerful weapon in the world. • You can not tell me what to do.

  6. Salami Tactics • Stalin sets out to make all countries in Eastern Europe communist. • Some said it was like slicing salami. • Take a little at a time.

  7. US Response to Salami Tactics • Marshall Plan and Truman Doctrine • Poor countries tend to become communist. • US decided to throw money at the problem (surprise)

  8. Berlin • Russia response to US giving money by setting up a blockade on Berlin. • Berlin Airlift • US and England respond by dropping supplies over Berlin.

  9. Countries Pick Sides • NATO • North Atlantic Treaty Organization • A group of democratic countries • Warsaw Pact • Communist respond to NATO • A group of Communist countries.

Source A: This cartoon by the British cartoonist David Low appeared in the Evening Standard on 30 October 1945 • On 27 October 1945, Truman made a speech about US foreign policy, which outlined twelve key points. These included a promise that the US did not want any territory, and did not intend to go to war with any country, small or large. • However, he also announced that the USA would be seeking defensive military bases, and that he did not intend to share the secrets of the atomic bomb with anybody. The speech alarmed the British, who saw it as increasing the tension between America and the Soviet Union, and also as an affront to the close diplomatic relationship between Britain and the United States.

Source B and C Source C Source B 'Can he block it?'   This cartoon was drawn c.1947 by Edwin Marcus, caricaturist for the New York Times.  It shows Stalin trying to stop the basketball of the 'Marshall Plan' scoring the basket labelled 'European recovery'. This Russian cartoon shows the Greek government being ‘helped’ by Uncle Sam (symbolising America).
