The Nature of Graduate Study • Different from most previous educational experiences. • Requires more self-direction. • Challenging and Intellectually rewarding. • Little time to waste – if you don’t know and you can’t figure it out, ASK! • May have to manage a large-scale project (e.g., thesis or dissertation). • Develop a professional identity (e.g., conference presentations, publications, college teaching) • Multi-tasking is required. • Career planning and job search.

  8. A Really Neat Thing… • The people affiliated with your program will actually seem more like family. That includes fellow students and your professors. This should be one of the best learning experiences of your life! • Remember – it is important to have fun but do not ever forget that someone is always watching you.

Keys to a Fast Start • Choose an adviser if one has not yet been assigned. • Define a course/program of study. • Seek to develop expertise in your field. • If there is any chance you’ll teach at the university level in the future, be looking to develop teaching skills. • Be quick to LISTEN and slow to speak. • Be responsible.

  13. Honor Code… All incoming JMU students, including graduate students, are required to watch a web-video containing information about the JMU Honor Code. Students must then take a web-based test on the material at their convenience from any location. The test must be completed by the end of the student's first semester at JMU. USES OF THE JACARD • Your official JMU ID card • Pick up packages at the JMU Post Office • Register your vehicle • Check out materials at the library • Admission to university athletic events • Cash personal checks at the Commonwealth One Credit Union • Access to computer labs • Receive treatment at the JMU Health Center

FLEX ACCOUNTS • Use FLEX on and off campus: • On Campus uses: Dining locations, Bookstore, Copy Centers, Mr. Chips, Forbes Center, Health Center, JMU Post Office, Vending machines, Library, Computer labs, University Recreation Center, Parking Services, and Concessions Stands. • Off Campus Uses: Use Flex at over 50 locations off campus from restaurants, grocery stores, and many more. For a current listing of all the locations visit our website at www.jmu.edu/cardctr. • Add funds by phone, fax, online, mail, or come by our office located in Warren Hall.

  19. Meal Plans/Dining Dollars Registered students may purchase a meal plan. There are several plans to choose from. They range from the Block 50 to the 19 per week. Punches may be used at most of the dining locations on campus…exclusions are Chic-Fil-A and Einsteins Bagels. Dining Dollars is the part of the meal plan that may be used for all dining locations and also includes vending machines and food at Mr. Chips. Purchase a meal plan by phone, fax, online, mail, or come by our office located in Warren Hall.

Dining Dollars Gold • Dining Dollars Gold may be used in place of a meal plan or if you run out of Dining Dollars. • It is accepted at all on campus dining locations • Receive a 5% discount on food • Save 11% on sales tax • Balances carry over from year to year as long as you are a student. • Add funds by phone, fax, online, mail, or come by our office located in Warren.

Lost or Stolen Card Lost or stolen cards should be reported immediately either to Card Services, Warren Hall (540) 568-6446, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. During other hours, report lost cards to Campus Police in Anthony Seeger Hall or online at www.jmu.edu/cardctr to have the card deactivated immediately.

Substance Abuse Prevention • Substance Abuse Prevention initiatives are designed to increase knowledge and awareness of alcohol and other drug issues, and decrease the negative consequences associated with high-risk drinking and illegal drug use. • Coordinates BASICS - Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students • Campus Coalition on Alcohol Abuse • SafeRidesProgram: provided over 20000 rides! • Dukes in Recovery, student led support network. • Your Call, a public service campaign In January 2009, the University Health Center’s Substance Abuse Prevention was established in Maury Hall.
