  8. What college is like…. Three 11-week quarters plus summer session Classes meet 2-3 times a week Group work Not this unfortunately….
  9. Instructors Expect… You will want to be in class You will do the work/participate: Complete assignments on time Read material prior to class Add to the discussion
  10. Instructors Also Expect… You will seek assistance if needed You will get notes from classmates if you miss class
  11. Homework – General Guidelines 1 credit = 2-3 hours of study beyond class per week Most classes = 5 credits So…15 credits = 30-45 hours of studying per week True for online classes, too!

  20. Finding Classes
  21. Running Start Enrollment Verification Form This form needs to be completed each quarter Student’s, Parent’s, and High School Counselor’s signatures are required This form lists maximum credits at the college covered by Running Start Bring this form, completed to your CORE Registration Session.   22. How to find classes Online Class Schedule: http://classes.cascadia.edu/ (Use the drop down box to select your quarter)
  23. Reading the Course Listing Item Numbers are extremely important! They apply only to the specific Course, time, Instructor, and class type indicated The textbook information is hyperlinked, click on it in the online course schedule to see what books you will need for your class (this will explained in a later slide and at the CORE session) Make sure that each part of the course fits into your schedule, times & days and type of class especially.
  24. Checking Prerequisites Check the course description of every class you plan to take to make sure you meets the prerequisites Check if a class needs to be taken in sequence
  25. Your first quarter schedule Not everyone has to take English, math, history, or political science the first quarter Science majors start your math early!
  26. What’s a “WAITLIST”? There may be a waitlist for full classes The top person is added when space opens. Maximum is 3 waitlists at a time, different sections of same class is not allowed Check your waitlist status regularly! Drop yourself from a waitlist if you do not intend to take the course
  27. Beyond your first quarter
  28. Degree Programs Most Running Start students do not earn their AA degree until after high school It is better to work toward a degree/major, even if you have to finish it after you graduate HS Make an appointment with an academic advisor to make a degree plan Check out the degrees we offer: http://www.cascadia.edu/programs/career_paths.aspx
  29. Participate in college clubs/events Cascadia offers lots of different student clubs You do not need to sign up to join a club. Participation is totally up to you and open to everyone (with the exception of some honors clubs)

Getting Ready for your First Quarter Check for textbooks 4-6 weeks before the quarter begins Pay any fees by the tuition/fee deadline – See calendar on the college web site Before classes begin : Activate student email account Get Student ID Card Verify Schedule Get your Bus Pass/Parking Permit (usually available a week before classes begin)
  32. Buying Your Books You must check if books are required for your classes Have your books for the first day of class Look on the bookstore shelves or look online…
