  1. Around the world in 5 daysChallenging pupil perceptions

  2. As we approached Stoke Rochford Hall what were we expect to achieve from the internationalising learning conference?

  3. What came to light was that our perception of the world was a little bit skewed ……we were not brilliant at being global citizensso we weren’t confidentthat our students were!

  4. Our project ….. Local and global theme : Awareness of the wider world Issues : Challenging stereotypes and developing a balanced view of people and places. Group : A group of 20 students, majority fast trackers, intelligent, confident, supportive parents, open in discussion and open to ideas (we thought).

  5. The mission : To challenge and change the stereotypical views the students hold of the world. To change them into global citizens in 5 days.

  6. Pre course Audit Real men do not cry Immigration has increased massively over the last 10 years Very mixed opinions White men are racist The French are rude Youths are a problem for society All African Americans are good at basketball AIDS is a devastating disease for the homosexual community Bisexuals are promiscuous The Average African person has to walk 3 hours to collect clean drinking water

  7. Pre course Audit GREAT! Very mixed opinions

  8. Day one – what are their opinions? Voting set audit Circus of activities to ascertain students perspectives of : • Family • Africa • Immigration • What it means to be British

  9. What did we find out?

  10. What did we find out? 85% of students failed to acknowledge that a same sex couple could be classed as a family. 50% of students didn’t include grandparents with their grandchildren as a family. 100% of students thought that immigrants come to this country for handouts!

  11. Day 2 – Challenging their views

  12. Day 3 & 4 – the projects Africa – produce a news report challenging the misconceptions held about this continent. To present this to the staff on the INSET day.

  13. Day 3 & 4 – the projects Immigration – design a notice board in the main entrance of the school tackling the preconceived and often incorrect opinions about immigration. Family – produce a presentation that can be shown in each house assembly to raise the awareness of family diversity.

  14. Day 5 – INSET day and reaudit

  15. The mission : To challenge and change the stereotypical views the students hold of the world. To change them into global citizens in 5 days. Success!

  16. Post Results Immigrants com e to this country for hand-outs Immigration has increased massively over the last 10 years Less than 3 pupil change The French are rude Elderly people are afraid to try new things All African people look the same Bisexuals are promiscuous The Average African person has to walk 3 hours to collect clean drinking water

  17. Post Results DEVASTATED! Less than 3 pupil change

  18. Powerful Data linked with Educational Research Number of words spoken to children by adults by the age of 36 months/150 hours Hart & Risley (1995) 90% of results are based on demographics not quality of teaching Perfect practise makes perfect Dylan Wiliam Former Deputy Director of the Institute of Education

  19. Pupil Comments • “I agree with what you have taught me but my family have more influence over me and my opinions than school” • “Are you not stereotyping us by assuming that we (the class) are stereotypical”

  20. Looking to the future …. • Understand backgrounds/family influence. • We need to provide a constant drip fed approach. • Embedded deep within our own teaching and learning/SOW. • You have to believe in what you are teaching • Snap Shots (PSHE) will not do the job. • Unfortunately not all staff see the big picture or understand the problem and find the subject condescending and demeaning.

  22. Olympic 2012 • To celebrate this and promote the bigger picture we are asking all form tutors to assist In raising the awareness of the Olympic games • Areas to consider when planning for your research. • Traditional dress • Language • Flags • Neighbouring countries • Clothes • Music • Food • Athletes taking part and trying to qualify • Regional events • Historical success
