BILE DUCT

Regaining of function after recent passage of stones

Bile duct1

Bile Duct

The common bile duct averages about 10 cm in length

Flow of bile from its lower end into the intestine is controlled by the muscular action of the hepatopancreatic sphincter (sphincter of Oddi), located in the duodenal papilla.

Question

Question

HOW LONG AFTER THE RECENT PASSAGE OF STONES DOES THE COMMON BILE DUCT BECOME NORMAL?

Main function of ercp

Main Function of ERCP

ERCP – Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopacreatography

The main indications for ERCP are:

  • Removal of common bile duct stones

  • 2. Dilation of benign biliary ducts strictures

  • 3. Stent placement in patients with malignancy

  • 4. Acute biliary pancreatitis

  • 5. Removal of stones and dilation of strictures of the main pancreatic duct in patients with chronic pancreatitis

  • 6. Treatment of biliary fistulae after surgical operations .

Inclusion exclusion criteria

Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria

  • Ages Eligible for Study:  18 Years and older

  • Genders Eligible for Study:  Both

  • AcceptsHealthyVolunteers:  No

  • Sampling Method:  Non-Probability Sample

  • Study Population

  • patients undergoing ERCP and ES for benign disease

Bile duct

Agreat amount of concern about late development of cancer after ES.

Bergman et al in a small trial argues that after ES, the function of the biliary sphincter is permanently lost.

On the other hand, Sugiyama et al demonstrated the reduction of pancreatobiliary reflux 1 year after ES.

Bile duct

  • Common bile duct usually regains it’s function by 2 to 4 days determined by the resolution of jaundiced of asymptomatic patients.

  • Reported in the article by the resolution of jaundice of the patient after successful passage of stone from ERCP.

  • Patients whose jaundiced was not resolved was immediately scheduled and underwent Laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

  • Patients who reacted positively in ERCP was able to postpone surgical intervention by 2 – 12 weeks.
