  1. Work Plan Goals Wendilyn Kaufeld July 8, 2001 PROPHET REU

  2. Main Goal: Test the hypothesis that large aerosols correlate with higher humidities, and small aerosols correlate with lower humidities • Why is this interesting? • How will these variables be measured? • How is this study new? • How will a relationship be found, if there is one?

  3. Why look at water content and sulfate aerosol size? • To examine the effect the amount of water in the air has on aerosols, particularly sulfate (SO4=) • Small, dry aerosols increase in size when coming into contact with water • Particle size may grow to lie in the visible range, scattering light more efficiently

  4. How will relative humidity (RH) and sulfate particle size be measured? • LI-COR LI-7500 will be used to measure water content in the air (and CO2 content) • Levels measured by infrared absorbance • Mounted on a boom on the tower top • Sulfate particle size (among many other things) will be measured by the rest of my group with an aerosol mass spectrometer (AMS)

  5. How is this study new? Relationship between sulfate particle size and relative humidity has already been examined Data will be taken SYNCHRONOUSLY with all other measurements (anemometer, temperature, aerosol size, aerosol type, relative humidity, and CO2 levels)

  6. How will a relationship between them be found? • After a C program stores the data, a Matlab program will analyze it • Look at water and CO2 fluxes with time • Look at relative humidity versus particle size • COVARIANCE = determine how linear the relation is • +1 implies positive linear relationship • 0 implies no linear relationship • -1 implies negative linear relationship

  7. Summary • Use the LI-7500 to gather relative humidity and CO2 levels synchronously with other instruments • Compare relative humidity with sulfate particle size, determine relationship with covariance • Examine any other possible relationships
