  3. I’ve got to see this! • (1 Ki 10:1 NKJV) Now when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the LORD, she came to test him with hard questions.

  4. Jesus refers to the queen of the south • (Mat 12:42 NKJV) "The queen of the South will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, for she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and indeed a greater than Solomon is here.

  5. Commended for Seeking • It means that she came from a remote country; and she would condemn that generation, for she came “a great distance” to hear the wisdom of Solomon, but the Jews of that age would not listen to the wisdom of one “much greater” than Solomon, though present with them -- Albert Barnes

  6. A very great retinue • (1 Ki 10:2 NKJV) She came to Jerusalem with a very great retinue, with camels that bore spices, very much gold, and precious stones; and when she came to Solomon, she spoke with him about all that was in her heart.

  7. “With a very great train” • she came to Jerusalem with a very great train, with camels — A long train of those beasts of burden forms the common way of travelling in Arabia; and the presents specified consist of the native produce of that country. Of course, a royal equipage would be larger and more imposing than an ordinary caravan. -- Jamieson, Faussett, & Brown

  8. Solomon could answer • (1 Ki 10:3 NKJV) So Solomon answered all her questions; there was nothing so difficult for the king that he could not explain it to her.

  9. “Had Seen Wisdom” • (1 Ki 10:4 NKJV) And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, • “had seen all the wisdom” – Seen in the sense that she heard and understood.

  10. “The house that he had built,” • (1 Ki 10:4 NKJV) And when the queen of Sheba had seen all the wisdom of Solomon, the house that he had built, • the house that he had built, -- Which house? His personal house, or the temple? His building, regardless.

  11. The Queen’s Response • (1 Ki 10:5 NKJV) the food on his table, the seating of his servants, the service of his waiters and their apparel, his cupbearers, and his entryway by which he went up to the house of the LORD, there was no more spirit in her.

  12. There was no more spirit in her • - She was overpowered with astonishment; she fainted. I have seen precisely the same effect produced; a lady who was herself an artist, viewing some exquisitely finished oriental paintings, was so struck with astonishment that she twice nearly fainted, and was obliged to leave the room.. -- Adam Clarke (cont.)

  14. "It was a true report” • (1 Ki 10:6 NKJV) Then she said to the king: "It was a true report which I heard in my own land about your words and your wisdom.

  15. "However I did not believe it” • (1 Ki 10:7 NKJV) "However I did not believe the words until I came and saw with my own eyes; and indeed the half was not told me. Your wisdom and prosperity exceed the fame of which I heard.

  16. Her Summary • (1 Ki 10:8 NKJV) "Happy are your men and happy are these your servants, who stand continually before you and hear your wisdom!

  17. How Can we hear his wisdom? • The book of Proverbs • Ecclesiastes • Song of Solomon – Maybe.

  18. What Is Wisdom? • (Prov 4:5 NKJV) Get wisdom! Get understanding! Do not forget, nor turn away from the words of my mouth.

  19. Wisdom is Found in the Bible • (Psa 119:104-105 NKJV) Through Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. {105} Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.

  20. Wisdom is Found in asking • (James 1:5 NKJV) If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him.

  21. Wisdom and Knowledge are not the same. • It is difficult, or impossible to make wise decisions without know the facts. • Just knowing the facts does not mean we will make wise decisions.

  22. The Queen’s Understanding • (1 Ki 10:9 NKJV) "Blessed be the LORD your God, who delighted in you, setting you on the throne of Israel! Because the LORD has loved Israel forever,therefore He made you king, to do justice and righteousness."

  23. A generous Gift • (1 Ki 10:10 NKJV) Then she gave the king one hundred and twenty talents of gold, spices in great quantity, and precious stones. There never again came such abundance of spices as the queen of Sheba gave to King Solomon.

  24. “The navy of Hiram” • (1 Ki 10:11 NKJV) Also, the ships of Hiram, which brought gold from Ophir, brought great quantities of almug wood and precious stones from Ophir. • The navy of Hiram - i. e., Solomon’s navy in the Red Sea, which was chiefly manned by subjects of Hiram. (see the marginal reference).

  25. “The almug wood” • (1 Ki 10:12 NKJV) And the king made steps of the almug wood for the house of the LORD and for the king's house, also harps and stringed instruments for singers. There never again came such almug wood, nor has the like been seen to this day.

  26. The Queen Returns • (1 Ki 10:13 NKJV) Now King Solomon gave the queen of Sheba all she desired, whatever she asked, besides what Solomon had given her according to the royal generosity. So she turned and went to her own country, she and her servants.

  27. His yearly income from foreigners • (1 Ki 10:14 NKJV) The weight of gold that came to Solomon yearly was six hundred and sixty-six talents of gold,

  28. From Foreign Sources • Now the weight of gold that came to Solomon in one year — 666 talents, equal to about $20,000,000. The sources whence this was derived are not mentioned; nor was it the full amount of his revenue; for this was “Beside that he had of the merchantmen, and of the traffic of the spice merchants, and of all the kings of Arabia, and of the governors of the country.” -- Jamieson, Faussett, & Brown (This was many years ago)

  29. Additional Income • (1 Ki 10:15 NKJV) besides that from the traveling merchants, from the income of traders, from all the kings of Arabia, and from the governors of the country.

  30. Expensive Shields • (1 Ki 10:16 NKJV) And King Solomon made two hundred large shields of hammered gold; six hundred shekels of gold went into each shield. • These were made at a cost of about $6,000 each.

  31. Do you Trust in Gold? • (1 Ki 10:17 NKJV) He also made three hundred shields of hammered gold; three minas of gold went into each shield. The king put them in the House of the Forest of Lebanon.

  32. How Long did they Last? • (1 Ki 14:25-26 NKJV) It happened in the fifth year of King Rehoboam that Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem. {26} And he took away the treasures of the house of the LORD and the treasures of the king's house; he took away everything. He also took away all the gold shields which Solomon had made.

  33. Careful about your gold • (Mat 6:19-20 NKJV) "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; {20} "but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.

  34. Why Cover Ivory with Gold? • (1 Ki 10:18 NKJV) Moreover the king made a great throne of ivory, and overlaid it with pure gold.

  35. Or Maybe the ivory wasn’t covered • It is, on the whole, probable that the substance of the throne was wood, and that the ivory, cut into thin slabs, and probably carved in patterns, was applied externally as a veneer. This is found to have been the practice in Assyria. The gold was probably not placed over the ivory, but covered other parts of the throne.

  36. More about the throne • (1 Ki 10:19 NKJV) The throne had six steps, and the top of the throne was round at the back; there were armrests on either side of the place of the seat, and two lions stood beside the armrests.

  37. More about the throne • (1 Ki 10:20 NKJV) Twelve lions stood there, one on each side of the six steps; nothing like this had been made for any other kingdom.

  38. Only Gold will do! • (1 Ki 10:21 NKJV) All King Solomon's drinking vessels were gold, and all the vessels of the House of the Forest of Lebanon were pure gold. Not one was silver, for this was accounted as nothing in the days of Solomon.

  39. Precious metals & Animals • (1 Ki 10:22 NKJV) For the king had merchant ships at sea with the fleet of Hiram. Once every three years the merchant ships came bringing gold, silver, ivory, apes, and monkeys. • ( NASB) For the king had at sea the ships of Tarshish with the ships of Hiram; once every three years the ships of Tarshish came bringing gold and silver, ivory and apes and peacocks.

  40. Solomon’s Rank in the World • (1 Ki 10:23 NKJV) So King Solomon surpassed all the kings of the earth in riches and wisdom.

  41. Solomon’s Wisdom was sought • (1 Ki 10:24 NKJV) Now all the earth sought the presence of Solomon to hear his wisdom, which God had put in his heart.

  42. His Present – His Tribute • (1 Ki 10:25 NKJV) Each man brought his present: articles of silver and gold, garments, armor, spices, horses, and mules, at a set rate year by year.

  43. “His Present – His Tribute” • His present - i. e., his tribute: A statement illustrated by Egyptian and Assyrian sculptures on slabs and obelisks. Tribute-bearers from the subject kings, bring not only the fixed rate of bullion, but a tribute in kind besides, consisting of the most precious products of their respective countries.

  44. Solomon’s Army • (1 Ki 10:26 NKJV) And Solomon gathered chariots and horsemen; he had one thousand four hundred chariots and twelve thousand horsemen, whom he stationed in the chariot cities and with the king in Jerusalem.

  45. Solomon’s Army • Until the time of Solomon, war-chariots had not been in use among the Jews, except to a very small extent.Hence, it was necessary for him to put himself on an equality in this respect with neighboring powers. • Cities for chariots - They were probably fortresses upon the borders of his territory, in which he maintained the standing army necessary for the support of his dominion.

  46. “Made silver as stones.” • (1 Ki 10:27 NKJV) The king made silver as common in Jerusalem as stones, and he made cedar trees as abundant as the sycamores which are in the lowland.

  47. “Made silver as stones.” • - This strong hyperbole marks in the most striking way the great wealth and prosperity of the capital during Solomon’s reign. The lavish expenditure which impoverished the provinces, and produced, or helped to produce, the general discontent that led to the outbreak under Jeroboam, enriched the metropolis, which must have profited greatly by the residence of the court, -- Albert Barnes

  48. Solomon buys Horses • (1 Ki 10:28 NKJV) Also Solomon had horses imported from Egypt and Keveh; the king's merchants bought them in Keveh at the current price.
