Testing a Strategy to Increase IUCD Use in Nepal: ADRA/Nepal Operations Research Proposal

Community-based Family Planning Day

May 16, 2006

Introduction – Overview of Project

  • Eastern Region Family Planning Expansion Project (Nepal)

  • Implemented in 6 districts of eastern development region

  • Strategic Objective:

  • To improve maternal and child health by reducing mistimed, unwanted, and high-risk pregnancies

Program Problem

Intra Uterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD) is under utilized in comparison with other methods due to:

  • Inadequate knowledge

  • Socio-cultural barriers – myths

  • Limited availability of services

Objective of the Study

To determine whether increasing access to IUCD by training service providers in insertion, removal and counseling and promoting knowledge and addressing socio-cultural myths through community mobilization, increases new acceptors of IUCD.

Methodology – Study Design

Time series

01 012 X 013 024

12m* 12 m

* Intervention start time may vary by site, though each site will be assessed 12 months pre and 12 months post. Data for months 1-12 will be collected retrospectively; for months 13-24, prospectively.

Independent Variable

  • Training for providers on IUCD insertion, removal and counseling

  • Community mobilisation* to promote knowledge and address socio-cultural myths about IUCD

    * Includes training, education, and incorporation into workplans/activities of various community-based groups (HFMC, DHDC, FCHV, DRHCC, mothers groups, special day celebrations, peer educators, MAP groups, health teachers, JRCC)

Dependent Variable

Dependent Variable

  • Number of new IUCD acceptors in 5 District Hospitals

  • Proportion of new FP acceptors choosing IUCD

Benefits of OR to ADRA and other NGOs

  • Understand and apply process for designing and implementing an OR study

  • Advocate for scaling up of successful results of interventions

  • Answer important questions within ongoing programs

  • Apply lessons learned from OR to other projects

  • Learning what makes a solid OR proposal (critiquing)

  • Capacity strengthening of implementing and backstopping staff
