GLAUCOMA

Glaucoma is a group of diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve. <br>The optic nerve is located at the back of the eye and helps with visualisation by transmitting visual signals from the eye to the brain. <br>The optic nerve can cause blindness if it is damaged. <br>The optic nerve is often damaged in glaucoma due to abnormally high pressure exerted on it.<br>

What is Glaucoma? • Glaucoma is a group of diseases that cause damage to the optic nerve. • The optic nerve is located at the back of the eye and helps with visualisation by transmitting visual signals from the eye to the brain. • The optic nerve can cause blindness if it is damaged. • The optic nerve is often damaged in glaucoma due to abnormally high pressure exerted on it.

  3. Glaucoma is also thought to be the main cause of adult blindness. • The patient has undetectable or no signs in a few cases of glaucoma. • The effect is so subtle that it will not be detected until the disease has progressed to a critical level.

  4. What are the symptoms of Glaucoma? • Visual impairment. • Vision is blurry. • Headache that persists. • Redness in the eyes. • Nausea and vomiting are symptoms of stomach upset. • Pain in the eyes.

  5. Causes of Glaucoma • Build-up of aqueous humor inside the eye • Genetic reasons • Birth defects • Blunt or chemical injury  • Acute eye infection • Blockage by blood vessels inside the eye • Inflammatory conditions • In rare cases, previous eye surgeries
