  2. The Chaplain and Colonel Korn: • “The chaplain was not certain at which of the five officers’ and five enlisted men’s mass halls… grounds in disjuncted relationships.” (200/210) • “It was Colonel Korn who had mapped out this way of life… made the officers uncomfortable.” (201/211) • General Dreedle and Colonel Moodus: • “He hasn’t gotten laid since we shipped overseas… Can you imagine what I’m going through?” (217/227) SATIRE

  3. Colonel Cathcart and the house in the hills: • “All Colonel Cathcart knew about his house in the hills… to a beautiful women unless there was something in it for him.” (211/221) • Milo’s pitting of the Americans against the Germans: • “Milo’s planes were a familiar site… It was an ideal arrangement for everyone but the dead man in Yossarian’s tent, who was killed over the target the day he arrived.” (254-5/265) SATIRE (cont.)

  4. The Chaplain is not a people person: • “The chaplain relishes the privacy and isolation… the chaplain did not mix freely and was not comfortable in conversation.” (201-2/212) • Colonels profiteer from the War: • “‘No, sell,’ Milo corrected Yossarian. ‘I distributed my plum tomatoes… and everybody comes out ahead.’” (232/242) • The Old Man’s wisdom: • “You put so much stock in winning wars… come out on top again in we succeed in being defeated.” (245/255) IRONY

  5. Yossarian’s lack of clothes: • “‘Well, I’ll be damned,’” mumbled General Dreedle… Colonel Korn demanded of Captain Piltchard and Captain Wren.” (218/228) • Moaning Scene: • “Yossarian did not hear him… and Nately’s hair stood on the end.” (220-1/230-1) HUMOR

  6. Colonel Cathcart and the Yossarians: • “A moment ago there had been no Yossarians in his life; now they were multiplying like hobgoblins.” (210/220) • “The colonel sat back when he had finished and was extremely pleased… that just did not inspire confidence.” (210/220) HYPERBOLE

  7. The Great Depression: • “You have no job and your car is out of gas. To get more gas, you need to make money. To make money, you need to get a job. To get a job, you need to use your car to go into the city and find a job. But you have no money, and no gas to find a job.” • Technology: • “An old man is finally attempting to set up internet in his home. To set up internet, he needs to give the internet company an email address. To get an email address, he needs to have internet.” • “My wireless keyboard isn't paired with my iMac. I don't have a keyboard that isn't wireless, and my computer is locked with password protection (must type in password).” Catch-22’s

  8. Life: • “My university has asked me to transfer because they expel anyone with a GPA under a 2.0, yet I cannot transfer because no other college will take an applicant with less than a 2.0! This policy is such a catch-22!” • Similar to example above: Your car is out of gas. To get gas into your car, you need to get to the gas station. But since your car is out of gas, you cannot move anywhere. • “If someone you know has an eating disorder and they ask you “do I look fat?” If you tell them they look skinny, they will be happy that you said that, will be satisfied with the results, and will probably continue to binge or purge or do they are doing. If you tell them they look fat, they will starve themselves some more.” Catch-22’s

  12. A song about irony. The most ironic part just might be that none of those situations are truly ironic, but rather just bad luck! Definition of Irony: Verbal Irony is a statement that implies a meaning opposite to the literal meaning. A situation is often said to be ironic if the actions taken have an effect exactly opposite from what was intended. In dramatic irony, the author causes a character to speak or act erroneously, out of ignorance of some portion of the truth of which the audience is aware Ironic - Alanis Morissettehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8v9yUVgrmPY

  13. An old man turned ninety-eightHe won the lottery and died the next dayIt's a black fly in your ChardonnayIt's a death row pardon two minutes too lateIsn't it ironic, don't you think[Chorus]It's like rain on your wedding dayIt's a free ride when you've already paidIt's the good advice that you just didn't takeWho would've thought, it figuresMr. Play It Safe was afraid to flyHe packed his suitcase and kissed his kids good-byeHe waited his whole damn life to take that flightAnd as the plane crashed down he thought"Well, isn't this nice."And isn't it ironic,l don't you think[Chorus]Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on youWhen you think everything's okay and everything's going rightAnd life has a funny way of helping you out whenYou think everything's gone wrong and everything blows upIn your faceA traffic jam when you're already lateA no-smoking sign on your cigarette breakIt's like 10,000 spoons when all you need is a knifeIt's meeting the man of my dreamsAnd then meeting his beautiful wifeAnd isn't it ironic, don't you thinkA little too ironic, and yeah I really do think[Chorus]Well, life has a funny way of sneaking up on youAnd life has a funny way of helping you out, Helping you out.
