Stress • Pressure or tension exerted on a material object • A state of mental or emotional strain or tension resulting from adverse or very demanding circumstances • “The stress system is a complex, sophisticated and carefully regulated adaptation that has been shaped by natural selection because it gives a selective advantage”

  3. 3 Phases of • Alarm Stage • Resistance Stage • Exhaustion Stage

  4. Alarm Stage • Fight or Flight • Sympathetic Nervous System take and active role in triggering the stress response • Effects include: • Arousal • Increase blood pressure • Increase heart rate • Increase respiratory rate • Physical activity

  5. Fight or Flight Response • Muscles become tense • Blood pressure increases • Breathing increases • Pupils dilate • Digestion slows down or stops • Hearing becomes better • Sweating increases • Skin temperature decreases • Immune system slows down • More blood is sent to the muscles for quick movement • Liver releases sugar for quick energy • Amount of stomach acid increases

  7. Exhaustion Stage • Energy is depleted • Body returns to normal if stress removed • Body returns to alarm stages is stress continues
