  1. Writing Inverse Story Problems Multiplication/Division

  2. every multiplication story can be written inversely as 2 division stories Do you know how this works? Let’s find out!

  3. The story below is an example of a simple multiplication story. Madlyn ate 12 potato chips for lunch every day for 9 days. In 9 days Madlyn ate 108 potato chips.

  4. Inverse division # 1 Madlyn ate a total of 108 chips. If she ate 12 chips per day, how many days did she eat chips?

  5. Inverse Division #2 Madlyn ate a total of 108 chips in 9 days. She ate an equal number of chips each day. How many chips per day did Madlyn eat?

  6. Let’s try to write our own…look at this multiplication problem Mitchell practiced football 8 hours per week for four weeks. How many hours of football has Mitchell accumulated? Making the connection To write an inverse story showing the connection between multiplication and division, I will use the same character and setting. However, division will take Mitchell’s total hours and find either the hours per week or the number of weeks.

  7. With a partner at your table, fill in the correct numbers for each blank. • Mitchell practiced a total of _____ hours of football. This is his total hours for ______ weeks. How many hours per week did Mitchell practice? • Mitchell practiced football ________ hours in all. He accumulated these hours over a period of ___________ weeks. How many hours did he practice per week if his hours were distributed evenly over the weeks?

  8. With your learning partner, read the following multiplication story. Write the two inverse stories that relate to the multiplication story. Remember to keep the characters, setting, and other elements the same. Change the story in the ways needed to write two division stories. • Mrs. Brandon travels 11 miles to and from work each day. How many miles does she drive in 10 days?
