The Digitar project (Digitalization of the Archives)
B-Telecom seminar october 9 • The three phases of the project • Some milestones • Terminal replacement • Scanning of “New documents” (C9) • Scanning of the existing files (C1) • The network : before & after • The “Disaster Recovery” solution
The three phases of the project • Phase 1 : • Replacement of the network and existing terminals • Phase 2 : • Digitalisation, with the same “force probante”, of the documents entering daily in the Branches (=BC) (C9 documents = “new documents”) … • Phase 3 : • Scanning of the existing files (C1 documents) • Replace paper files by digitalized files
Terminal replacement • More than 1.800 “secured” workstations (PC) • Used for : • access to mainframe applications via terminal emulation • ONEm Intranet • viewing of the digitalized files C9 - C1 • Workstations : Dell GX240 - PIV - 1.000 Mhz (en more …) - 256 MB - “Small Form Factor” • Access to mainframe applications via a simple Browser (Internet Explorer) and “Active/X” component
Terminal replacement • Choice : TFT flat screens • Two categories of users : • unfrequent imaging users (+- 2/3) : Philips 15” screens • frequent users of imaging (+- 1/3) : Philips 18” screens
Scanning of new documents • Volumes : (2.300.000 + 460.000) * 6 = 16,5 millions pages/year • 1 page = +- 50 Kbytes, so more than 800 Gbytes per year • Images scanned and controlled in the branches • Background transfer of images to the Central Administration (AC) via the network • All images stored centrally (Jukeboxes) and sent to workstations on demand
Recovery of existing classifications • Volumes : • more than 2.066.000 “active” files • mean of 50 pages (images) per file = 103.325.000 images • 1 image = +- 50 Kbytes, so total volume of about 5 Terabytes (x 2 in DRC) • Decentralised scanning in all Branches • Spread over 3 years • 2 archiving lines at AC (+ 2 at Disaster Recovery Center)
