  4. Undergraduate Education GOAL: Continue ongoing efforts to strengthen and assess the central educational mission of the undergraduate experience by: • Creating more experiential learning opportunities for students: • service learning activities • internships • research opportunities

  5. Undergraduate Education (cont’d.) (Goals, cont’d.) • Enhancing further the Tulane residential experience through improved facilities, living/learning communities, residential colleges, etc. • Continuing to expand the first year experience and make use of New Orleans as a learning laboratory

  6. Undergraduate Education(cont’d.) (Goals, cont’d.) • Launching faculty-driven projects that increase interaction with undergraduates • Experimenting with curricular design, delivery and pedagogical approaches that facilitate student learning

  7. Undergraduate Education (cont’d.) ACCOMPLISHMENTS: • Numerous accomplishments in each of the respective undergraduate schools and colleges • Experimented with Living/Learning communities; led to establishment of the TIDES program, with 750 students AY 2002 in 8 themed focus areas

ACCOMPLISHMENTS (cont’d.): • Established first-year experience, including reading experience for all new freshmen with faculty and author involvement • Expanded Honors (Fall 03) to include top Engineering students; plans to expand to other undergraduate programs • 8 Teaching in Excellence Awards

ACCOMPLISHMENTS (cont’d.): Office of Service Learning: • Students engaged: 494 (1998); 727 (2002) • Courses offered: 5 (1998); 25 (2002) • Academic internships*: 22 (2000); 23 (2002) • Hours of community service: ~12,350 (1998); 23,495 (2002) * # of students placed through OSL only; does not include departmental internships

  10. Undergraduate Education (cont’d.) ACCOMPLISHMENTS (cont’d.): Wall Fund Awards: • Living Learning Communities • Achieving Information Literacy: Freshman Writing and Staff Development • New residential facilities with Master’s Residences planned • University Center renovation

  11. Undergraduate Education (cont’d.) ACCOMPLISHMENTS (cont’d.): • Business School expansion • Customer service in Accounts Receivable, Financial Aid, Registrar, and Career Services offices improving

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: Improved selectivity: • Applications: 8,000 (Fall 98); 14,000 (Fall 03) • Freshman enrollment*: 1476 (1998); 1546 (2002) • SAT average: 1278 (1998); 1327 (2002) • Freshmen in top 10% of high school graduating class: 54% (1998); 61% (2002), 83% in top 25% *includes University College

  15. Graduate Education GOAL: Create the vision and plan for the graduate school and its programs

  16. Graduate Education (cont’d.) ACCOMPLISHMENTS: • Appointed Graduate School Dean • Completed Graduate School assessment • Completing self-studies of uptown sciences programs; external review panel visit scheduled for April

ACCOMPLISHMENTS (cont’d.): • Initiated Endowed Fellowship program to assist recruiting of superior students in Social Sciences and Humanities; fellowship award of $4,000/yr + standard Graduate School Teaching Assistantship • Increased stipend levels by 15% over 2-year period

  18. Graduate Education(cont’d.) GOAL: Continue to build graduate and professional programs in areas where the program is or has the potential to achieve national/international stature

  19. Graduate Education(cont’d.) ACCOMPLISHMENTS: • Continued growth in revenue-generating Masters programs; 129 students currently enrolled in 22 Graduate School programs

  20. Professional Education GOAL: Selectively expand degree and non-degree professional programs to serve the unmet needs of adult learners regionally, nationally, and internationally

  21. Professional Education ACCOMPLISHMENTS: • Off-campus professional school expansions, e.g., • Business and Engineering in Houston • University College at the New Orleans Centre and in Biloxi • Social Work in Thibodeaux Wall Fund Award: • Executive Masters Degree in Clinical Research Program

Interaction between Levels and Across Schools and Colleges GOALS: Identify faculty-driven programs that create interaction between levels and across schools and colleges, such as: • degree paths and interdisciplinary programs • linkages between schools and colleges and across educational levels • linkages between educational and research endeavors

ACCOMPLISHMENTS: • Proposed undergraduate degree program in Public Health (Fall 04) Wall Fund Awards: • Environmental Health Sciences and Civil/Environmental Engineering (Engineering, SPTHM) • Center for Ethics and Public Affairs (LAS, SoM, Business)

  25. Interaction between Levels and Across Schools and Colleges(cont’d.) GOAL: Create degree paths and structures that allow exceptional undergraduates to move quickly to graduate and professional study

  26. Interaction between Levels and Across Schools and Colleges(cont’d.) ACCOMPLISHMENTS: • Increased the number of 4+1 and 3/2 Master’s programs, e.g., Engineering, Public Health, Neurosciences, etc.

Work in Progress: Major Initiatives Undergraduate: • Improve student service functions: “One-stop shopping” • Continue physical facility improvements: residential, library, instructional space • Continue to enhance the quality of the student collegiate experience (curriculum, co-curricular, extra-curricular)

  28. Work in Progress (cont’d.) Graduate: • Continue to increase stipends to competitive levels • Focus on graduate programs with the potential to be among the best in the country • Institutionalize external program reviews • Increase the quality of the graduate student body
