  1. Safety is Your Responsibility While Studying Abroad at Harlaxton

  2. Responsibility • Theme of this presentation! You will have many new responsibilities while at Harlaxton, which we will discuss in the following slides. • You are responsible not only for your own safety, but also how your actions affect the safety of your friends, classmates, and staff while at Harlaxton

  3. FIRE SAFETY HUGE concern at Harlaxton Manor is old and flammable.Smoking is not allowed anywhere in the Manor. It is your responsibility to pay attention at the fire safety meetings and understand what to do in the event of a fire Fire that Burned Stoke Rochford Hall

  4. Responsibility In the Manor • You are responsible for being smart about what you have in your room • Drugs and alcohol are not permitted in your room • Be respectful of your roommates and their possessions

  5. Responsibility for Your Health • There is a nurse who holds office hours in the Health Center during the week • If a serious issue arises, the nurse or the Student Development Office can contact a doctor for you • You won’t necessarily find the same over the counter medications in the UK or Europe as you do in the U.S. • Conquer your homesickness by seeking experiences you wouldn’t have at home

  6. Drinking & Alcohol • The drinking age in nearly all European countries is 18. In the UK, the drinking age and the driving age are both 18. • Make sure you have your ID (recommended: license & ISIC card) at any time you are drinking • Drinking in Transport: Legal on European airlines and British national trains. You should not open any item containing alcohol on any other form of transportation (i.e. taxis). • If you choose to drink, your only choice should be to DRINK RESPONSIBLY!!!!

  7. Drinking & Alcohol • Typically, students fall into 3 categories of drinkers while studying abroad: • Regular Drinker • Occasional Drinker • Rare (or Never) Drinker • Drinking inside the manor at the Bistro is a privilege, not a right. If you abuse the privilege, it will be taken away. • Alcohol is NOT allowed on the Harlaxton Shuttle!!

  8. Drinking & Alcohol • When you choose to drink, you assume responsibility for what happens to yourself and those around you as a result. • Practice caution when drinking, especially outside of Grantham (i.e. a place where not everyone speaks English or is used to such a high concentration of American students) • Drinking can be expensive! Think about how much of your budget you want to devote to alcohol. Remember there are places to go and sites to see. • Try not to live up to American stereotypes!

  9. Emergencies • Dial 999 or 112 • Don’t be afraid to admit you have an emergency • Don’t be afraid to ask for help • Look up the U.S. Embassy’s contact info • Always carry Harlaxton’s contact info

  10. Don’t Forget These Basic Safety Tips • Use common sense for safety measures • Be vigilant while traveling • Note your surroundings and the people around you
