  3. Introduction As a member of writers at a local publishing firm, you and your working cohorts have written and published many children's books. You have written fairy tales, books about hobbies/crafts, pet-care books, science-fiction novels and novels about sibling-rivalries. Now your editor-in chief is looking to publish a collection of poetry.

  4. Introduction Continued… Poetry… What would a group of writers who have the above writing resume know about poetry? The "boss" has given you an "assignment" to come up with a collection of "original" poetry that will make the "Top 10" best-selling list! What you know about poetry you could probably put on the end of a "Pin Point" -- a writing "Pin Point" -- that is. And to make matters worse, the "boss" wants this work of art accomplished in a very timely manner. She has a deadline of two weeks, therefore you have an even shorter deadline.

Tasks… • Create a comprehensive list of poetic elements. • Locate 8 different forms of poetry and an example of each. • Analyze 4 poems from various authors on the same topic. • Write 4 original poems of your own. • Reflect on the writing process. • End product will be a booklet with all information collected and created.

Task 2: Analyzing poemsDue: Friday, March 23 • You pick a poet that you enjoy and find 4 poems by them to analyze. • Copy the poem with author to a word document. • Analyze the poem using 5 of your terms- • Some Ideas for analyzing.. • Imagery (note the sense being used) • Poetic devices (metaphor, simile, allusion, conceit, etc.) • Sound devices (alliteration, repetition, rhyme, etc.) • The experience communicated by the poem • The mood communicated by the poem • Answer the following questions for each poem and analyze them using 6 of your terms. • What is the poem’s rhyme scheme? • What is the theme of the poem?  (love, death, protest, women's liberation, prejudice, revenge, poverty, spring, etc.) • What does this poem mean to you?  How do you connect (or not connect) to this poem?

  11. Task 3: Original PoetryDue: Tuesday, 3/27 You will choose four (4) forms of poetry and create one original poem for each form for a total of four (4) new poems.

  13. Learning Advice • Remember that poetry can be written about many different things. Some suggested topics are: pets, hobbies, sports, school, emotions, best friends, food, clothes, a family member, the weather. These are just a few suggestions, but you may write about something not on the list. Check with me on an alternative topic before you begin composing your poetry. • It may also be helpful for you to have the internet browser and a word-processing document open "side by side" on the computer screen as you compose your poetry. This will allow you to use the Rhyming Dictionary and other resources/sites as needed.

  14. Task 4: ReflectionDue: Thursday, 3/29 You will write an 8-12 sentence paragraph reflecting on the process of writing poetry.

End Product • After completing all 4 tasks, you will need to create a booklet with the following… • Cover with Graphic, Name, and Class information • Table of Contents Page • Task 1: Guide to Poetry • Task 2: Analyzing poems • Task 3: Original Poetry • Task 4: Reflection • You will have all 4 pieces saved on your flash drive and will need to print them at home and staple them together. Portfolio is due on Thursday, March 29.

Congratulations on completing your WebQuest poetry portfolio! • Ideally, you now have a better knowledge of what poetry can do for you as well as how to recognize good poetry and the elements of poetry. • Looking back on your research process, what went well?  What didn't go well? What else would you have liked to learn?
