  2. Rhetorical Analysis • A close reading of a text to find out how and whether it works to persuade.

  3. Composing a rhetorical analysis (p. 98) • Analyze how well the components of an argument work together to persuade or move an audience. • What is the purpose of this argument? • Who is the audience for this argument? • What appeals or techniques does the argument use- ethos, logos or pathos? • What type or genre of argument is it, and how does the genre affect the argument?

  4. Consider, too: • What is the purpose of the argument? • Who is making the argument? Most arguments are made with specific audiences in mind, and their success depends, in part, on how well their strategies, content, tone and language meet the expectations of readers or viewers.

  5. Looking at persuasive techniques in speech • The president uses an anecdote to show how Iowa's hardships have now been the accomplishments of S. Carolina (presumably the state of his audience member). Also, he redefines what a good president is at 1:45 (classic device), and the new definition is as generalized as a horoscope in the newspaper. Finally, he gives himself a southern accent to sound similar to his audience members, If it's true, it's an ethos device to get his audience to identify with him.

Because to tell you the truth, I don't give a shit.
