  2. Adversary—n. • An enemy, opponent • Optimus Prime defeated his adversaryMegatron with ease.

  3. Alienate—v. • to turn away; to make indifferent or hostile; to transfer, convey • After the Vietnam War, many soldiers felt that they were alienated by protesters against the war.

  4. Artifice-n. • a skillful or ingenious device, a clever trick, a clever skill; trickery • Card counting is considered to be an artifice, and it is forbidden in casinos.

  5. Coerce-v. • to compel, force • After seeing all the spectacular savings in Black Friday ads, I felt coercedinto going shopping at 4 a.m.

  6. Craven-adj. • cowardly, a coward • Although lions are typically imagined as brave, the one in The Wizard of Oz was rather craven.

  7. Culinary-adj. • of or relating to cooking • Culinary masters are generally very concerned about the presentation of their food.

  8. Delete-v. • to erase, wipe out, cut out • While working on their glogs, many students accidentally deleted all their work by pressing the wrong button on the keyboard.

  9. Demise-n. • a death, especially of a person in a lofty position • An inability to compete with streaming video services led to the demise of Blockbuster Video.

  10. Exhilarate-v. • to enliven, cheer, give spirit or liveliness to • I think the idea of defying death exhilarates most people who do extreme activities.

  11. Fallow-adj. • plowed but not seeded; inactive; reddish-yellow, land left unseeded; to plow but not seed • The crop rotation system dictates that at least one field must remain fallow for a year in order to recover.

  12. Harass-v. • to disturb, worry; trouble by repeated attacks • Michael Scott often harassed his female employees with thoughtless statements.

  13. Inclement-adj. • stormy, harsh; severe in attitude or action • What we might view as inclement weather here in Maryland is barely noticed in places to our north.

  14. Muse-v. • to think about in a dreamy way, ponder • Instead of paying attention in class, the student, an inveterate daydreamer, would muse on the state of the universe.

  15. Negligible-adj. • so unimportant that it can be disregarded • Since they were not popular in the States, the Happy Mondays’ impact might be seen as negligible, but in reality they are a strong influence on many modern bands.

  16. Perpetuate-v. • to make permanent or long lasting • Memorials help perpetuate the memory of lost comrades.

  17. Precedent-n. • an example that may serve as a basis for intimation or later action • Brown v. the Board of Education was a landmark case that set a precedent for all Civil Rights legislation that followed.

  18. Punitive-adj. • inflicting or aiming at punishment • Although punitive action was taken against Jerry Sandusky, his victims will likely remain scarred for life.

  19. Redress-v. • to set right, remedy; relief from wrong or injury • Recalls are issued in order to redress a mistake in a faulty product.

  20. Sojourn • N.—a temporary stay • When I need a break, our farm is one of my favorite places for a sojourn. • V.—to stay for a time • When I was young, we would sojourn at my uncle’s farm in Clarence, NY.

  21. Urbane-adj. • refined in manner or style • IKEA’s business plan focuses on offering urbane furniture at affordable prices.
