  1. Anchoring AcademicsWelcome to Fourth Grade!

  2. e-Mints In June of 2011, I was selected to become the first e-Mints teacher at Daphne East. As an e-Mints teacher, I committed to over 200 hours of professional development outside my normal school day. I have learned through professional development that e-Mints is teaching through more hands-on activities, and the computers are a tool to enhance learning. I have embraced this way of teaching and am excited to share it with you and my students this year. I did receive 22 laptop computers in my classroom for my students and other neat technology. If you would like to know more about e-Mints, please visit: www.emints.org

  3. Organization • We are not born with organizational skills, they are learned throughout life. We choose whether or not to use the skills we learn. • I believe that organization is imperative in order for children to learn and be successful in school and life; therefore, this year your child will learn how to be organized. I will hold your child accountable and responsible for their organization.

  4. Notebook Organization • Each student will have a notebook with the following parts: 1. notebook paper with dividers 2. 2 labeled folders: homework to do, finished homework, papers parents keep, papers students return 3. pencil/pen /money bag 4. homework sheet

  5. Notebook Organization • I will teach your child how to use this notebook during the first two weeks of school. After the first two weeks, your child will be expected to use this notebook to keep study papers and items in the proper place.

Your child will have sustained silent reading activities with questions to answer afterwards. These activities will count as a reading grade.

  9. Math I will go over math homework each day. Homework quizzes will be given a couple of times weekly. Children will not know when a quiz will be given. There will be a math test every Friday. The test will cover the skills we have covered that week and review skills from previous weeks. All workbook pages andfoldablesare daily grades completed in class and students may ALWAYS use their newspaper and textbook. Students will not use their newspapers or textbooks on tests. Your child will be placed in a group to complete web quests using the computer. These web quests will be graded. The grades will consists of group grades and individual grades.

Your child will ALWAYS be allowed to use their Studies Weekly Paper to complete vocabulary activities, reading guides and foldables. The Weekly Studies Paper WILL NOT be used on tests.

  13. Graded Papers Will be sent home every other week. The top page must be signed by a parent. Papers should not be separated. ALL papers must be returned the next school dayafter being sent home. Your child will have ONE day of grace to bring in the papers before break detention is served.

  14. Heading on Papers Your child is expected to put the following on all papers: Name, Date, Subject/Assignment Information, Student Number After the first two weeks of school, 5 points will be deducted if this information is not present on every paper. This should not be a problem by 4th grade. Please remember, I grade over 100 papers each week. I do not have extra time to figure out which student owns each paper.

  15. Discipline The following conduct slip will be sent home each time your child breaks a school or classroom rule. The following slip will restart each day; however, if your child accumulates too many slips he/she will visit the office. I will begin sending slips home the SECOND week of school.

  16. The purposes of homework are to: review and practice what has been taught that day develop good study habits for the future learn to be responsible and self-disciplined manage time and meet deadlines get ready for the next day’s class learn to use resources, such as libraries, reference material, and the Internet

Your child will have a homework sheet in which to write down all homework assignments and tests. I will teach your child how to use the homework sheetduring the first two weeks of school. After the first two weeks, your child will then be responsible for writing down all assignments without supervision.

  18. Homework I will provide time each day for students to copy down homework information on the homework sheet. Please notice the homework chart on the white board. Assignments will be written here daily. If your child consistently fails to complete homework; I will check the homework sheet daily and initial. I will also require a parent signature on the homework sheet daily. Your signature will ensure that your child is completing homework correctly.

  19. Money and Forms MONEY: Your child should bring money in a sealed envelope or zipped plastic bag. The envelope or zipped plastic bag should be labeled with child’s name and the purpose of the money. MONEY: Please send in the exact amount of money for each activity. I do not have extra money on hand to make change.

  20. Money and Forms CHECKS: You must write a check for each individual activity, because the school CANNOT cash the check to separate the money. FORMS: Please fill-in all blanks on all forms. We may need the information in the event of a problem or emergency.

  25. www.nelsonsnavigators.com • Please follow our classroom blog to keep up with the classroom newsletter, educational links for students, and all the neat activities your children are doing in class!

  26. Points to remember: • Your child MUST know their multiplication facts. We will begin APPLYING the multiplication facts in chapter 2. • Homework is ALWAYS a review of what was taught in class, and should take less than two hours to complete. Please ask your child about paying attention in class; this could be their problem with homework. • I must emphasize the routines, procedures, and rules during the first month of school, so your child may not like me the first few weeks of school.
