  1. 9/17 or 9/18Question of the Day: How can you predict if an object will sink or float?

  2. Density Problems

  3. Density • Density = mass/Volume • D = m/V • Density = mass divided by volume • Units • Mass = grams (g) • Volume = cubic centimeters (cm3) or milliliter (mL) • Density = g/cm3or g/mL

  4. Problem #1 • A piece of metal has a mass of 90 grams and a volume of 10 cm3. What is the density of the metal? (Remember Units!!!!)

  5. Problem #2 • Calculate the density of a limestone rock that has a mass of 175 g and a volume of 25 cm3.

  6. Problem #3 • Water has a density of 1.0 g/mL. A piece of foam has a mass of 5 g and a volume of 10 mL. Will it float or sink in the water? How do you know?

  7. Challenge Problem • A soap dish has the dimensions of 8 cm x 11 cm x 2.5 cm. It has a mass of 28 g. If an average penny has a mass of 2.5 g, how many pennies would fit in the soap dish before it sinks?
