  1. Review- Natural Selection: differential success in reproduction; only form of microevolution that adapts a population to its environment

  2. Example of Natural Selection

  3. #125 Class Notes: How a New Species Evolves? • Natural Selection explains how a species changes in response to its environment. • Scientists know that variations in the populations of a species are caused by random mutations in genes. • Speciation- Mutations can lead to the formation of new species.

  4. New species evolves – in three steps: 1. Isolation (Geographical, Ecological, behavioral, and Temporal) 2. Adaptation 3. Differentiation

  5. Table 23.1a

  6. GEOGRAPHICAL ISOLATION Example • Original Population

  7. Isolation • Isolation- A population becomes divided by an event such a new river formation.

  8. Adaptation • Adaptation: Group gradually evolve separate adaptations to their environment.

  9. Differentiation Differentiation: Isolated population are genetically different and cannot interbreed.

  10. Geographical Isolation-example

  11. Geographical Isolation-Example

  12. Start taking Notes. What is extinction? • Extinction is when the environment changes and the adaptations of a species are no longer sufficient for its survival. • Changes may include • Increased competition • loss of habitat • catastrophes
