  1. Dare to Hope By Juan F. Navarro CIS 1020 – 037 To Teenagers (13 to 17)

  2. What's this thing called hope? • Hope-to cherish a desire with anticipation, and to expect with confidence (Merriam-Webster’s dictionary) • Pretty much hope is to look to the future with a bright anticipation. • Based on spirituality, or a sense to find meaning in life (not necessarily based on religions or belief in deity)

  3. A growing problem • This is a time of discovery, and a time of challenge. • Many teens lose hope when they face challenges that feel overwhelming. Depression can occur from this. • Depression is the fastest growing challenge for teens, whether it’s a temporary or it’s a longer lasting mental problem.

  4. Some reasons why teens get depression • Sexual orientation • Medical problems • Social Status • Environment • Loss of a loved one • Family Life • Academic pressures • Sports or extracurricular pressures • Relationships

  5. HOW MANY???

  6. HOW MANY??? (continued) • ..\Final Project Excell.xlsx • It is estimated that in a class of 27 students, about 19 will have faced depression episodes (lasting about 8 months), and 2 or 3 of them will have faced that for at least a year. • About 2 students in that class will also be suffering Major Depression

  7. And everyone else? • While not everyone suffers from medical depression, people sometimes face situations which bring hopelessness. • Every person faces challenges in their personal lives. • Life always has a dark side to it, but its not the side that we should focus on.

  8. Why hope? • Studies have shown that maintaining hope helps battle depression • Its also protective against developing depressive moods • Its something that can be learned • We all face holes in life, we can choose to be in it, or get out!

  9. What about…. • We all face times of challenges. Its part of the human experience • Hope isn't just expecting to go through life without problems • Hope helps us find meaning in life, and see beyond the momentary pain.

  10. Dare to hope • Hope means looking and doing something about the future! • Hope helps us find ways to express ourselves, through many different ways • We face the future, and that future rides on what we go out there to do with it! • Why Hope? It makes the world a better place

  11. Be a Friend • Help others who also face problems • Oftentimes, all a person needs is someone else to be there for them • You never know when you can give a person you know, a bright ray of hope.
