HOW TO MANAGE HOW TO MANAGE PROSTATE PROSTATE INSIGHTS FROM AYURVEDA Ayurveda possesses a unique set of principles through which a useful perspective can be formed to understand the causes and progression of prostate and urinary disorders.
Prostate Related Disorders Every person born as a male has a walnut-sized gland present right below the urinary bladder, known as the prostate gland. Its function is to release the prostate fluid in semen. This gland, with increasing age, usually becomes enlarged. This condition is known as benign prostate hyperplasia or BPH.
Why It Happens? With increasing size, it starts exerting pressure on the urinary bladder and urethra, which obstructs the smooth flow of urine out of the body. Generally, men over the age of 50 develop this condition. This condition often leads to other problems like LUTS (Lower urinary tract symptoms) and urinary incontinence. Insights from Ayurveda
LUTS (Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms) Lower urinary tract symptoms are a collection of symptoms related to irregular urine flow. These symptoms are said to be the result of the hindrance of the bladder outlet, technically known as ‘bladder outlet obstruction’ because of an enlarged prostate. Insights from Ayurveda
Main Symptoms: Weak urine stream or dribbling at the start Stopping/starting of stream in the middle Frequent urge to urinate Increased urination frequency at night Sensation that the bladder is not completely emptied Frequent urination in night (nocturia) Inability to urinate (in severe cases) Insights from Ayurveda
Urinary Incontinence The muscle of the urinary bladder, known as the detrusor muscle, contracts to hold urine in the bladder, and relaxes during the flow of urine. With the progression of age, the mental connection between the brain and the detrusor muscle weakens. This causes a very weak contracted state, leading to the loss of control over the urinary bladder. When control over the urinary bladder is lost, there is leakage of urine without the awareness of the person, which is known as urinary incontinence. Insights from Ayurveda
Development of BPH There is an enzyme known as 5-alpha reductase, which converts another testosterone into DHT (Dihydrotestosterone). This DHT is responsible for the growth of the prostate. Many studies suggest that sex steroid hormones like DHT, testosterone and estrogen are related to BPH and the LUTS. Insights from Ayurveda
Reasons Behind Prostate Problems The Ayurvedic philosophy views bodily processes as being moved by 3 main ‘Doshas’ or energies, collectively known as ‘Tridoshas.’ When these 3 doshas are balanced, all bodily processes move in a smooth and timely manner, including urination. Regular consumption of alcohol or beverages containing caffeine imbalances the Pitta and Vata doshas, leading to urinary disorders. Insights from Ayurveda
EATING HABITS: MEALS AT IRREGULAR TIMES Excess of junk foods and nutrient deficit diets also create an imbalance among the tridoshas. As a consequence, effective digestion suffers, and slow moving toxins (undigested substances) accumulate within the body. These toxins have been named “Aama,” and upon circulation, they also disrupt the smooth functioning of a variety of systems. Lack of adequate exercise and an unreliable routine throws the body’s rhythm off balance, contributing to these systemic problems.
Lack of Hydration Lack of hydration leads to the stagnation of fluid processes like digestion and flow of urine. Suppressing natural urinary flow for long periods of time puts unnecessary stress on the bladder and can also lead to long term problems associated with BPH, like LUTS. Jobs that involve sitting in one place for long stretches of time restrict circulation, and put the prostate and bladder under pressure or load. Insights from Ayurveda
How BPH Can Be Managed With Ayurveda Spices like turmeric, commonly present in the Indian diet, have a purifying action on the urinary bladder, and also reduce the activity of 5-alpha reductase. Hing is another useful spice that cleans the urinary bladder and helps with complete emptying. Having meals at regular times, and being well hydrated throughout the day helps to smoothen digestion and reduce the presence of aama (undigested toxins.) Having juicy fruits is a great way to meet water intake requirements. However, one should avoid drinking fluids close to bedtime. Insights from Ayurveda
How Change in Lifestyle Can Helps Apart from diet, certain lifestyle changes will also maximally help the body re-align its various systems by balancing the tridoshas; getting adequate exercise of moderate intensity (such as jogging, cycling or swimming), having a fixed routine for waking up, having meals, and getting enough high quality uninterrupted sleep. Ayurvedic Medicine To Control Symptoms: Several Ayurvedic medicine for prostate utilise the above-mentioned principles to control symptoms. Chandraprabha Vati is an ancient Ayurvedic medicine for prostate enlargement that has been used for thousands of years for urinary disorders and related problems. Insights from Ayurveda
