Types of assessment relating to schools • Formative assessment—determine whatknowledge/skills a student possesses for the purpose of formulating instruction to suit the needs of the student • Summative assessment—determine what knowledge/skills a student possesses in terms of determining what progress has been made by the student. Summative assessment most often involves the assigning of a grade
Forms of Assessment • Teacher observation of student performance (e.g. Pre-K teacher observing motor skills of a child at play or high school teacher observing a student working an algebra equation at his desk) • Homework problems • Written work • Quizzes • Tests
WPSB established indicators and expectations—Pupil Progression Plan • 68% mastery in reading and math for K-3 students • 68% mastery in reading, math, and English plus a combined 68% in science/social studies for students in grades 4-8 • 23 or 26 Carnegie units for graduation • Pass LEAP/GEE
Our Pupil Progression Plan also includes.. • Minimum of 9 grades taken each nine weeks in order to establish a grade in a subject • Use of iLEAP scores as part of nine-week grade • Established parish grading scale • 93-100 % = A • 85-92% = B • 77-84 = C • 68-76% = D • 0-67% = F
Comprehensive Assessment System • Grades K-2 (IOWA), 3, 5, 6, 7, and 9—iLEAP • Grades 4 and 8—LEAP (criterion-reference test) • Grades 10-11—Louisiana Exit Tests • K-3—Dibels (a test that is given 3 times yearly to assess reading skills) • School-Improvement Plan—collates virtually all assessment data over a five-year period
Use of Assessment Data • iLEAP and LEAP results are analyzed to determine areas of strength and weaknesses of instruction. Daily instructional focuses are formulated. • DIBELS results reveal “at risk” or “some risk” students. Daily small-group instruction is provided for such students. • School-improvement plan data is used to formulate a comprehensive needs assessment report with resulting school goals and objectives. • Student data folders are used to chart student growth and reveal student weaknesses. • Eighth-grade planning night provides an opportunity for teachers and parents to analyze individual student data for formulating high-school curriculum goals.
Communicating Assessment Results • Monthly school newsletters • School Report Card (Principal/Parent) • Press releases concerning school performance are provided to the local newspaper • District Accountability Report Card • Louisiana Superintendent’s Diagnostic Report • WPSB maintains an up-to-date website.
