  1. DVB-RCS systems in corporate networks ITU-CoE Bahrein December 9, 2003 Peter Schellaert

  2. Presentation Outline • What is DVB-RCS • Why DVB-RCS • How DVB-RCS • Application examples • Success stories

  3. WHAT is DVB-RCS?

  4. HUB What is DVB-RCS? • Digital Video Broadcast -Return Channel Signaling • International Standard • DVB-RCS is a BROADBAND ACCESS SATELLITE solution • BROADBAND • ADSL-like performances • IP-based • Bi-directional satellite traffic • Symmetric or asymmetric bandwidth • Multi service/Multi applications • ACCESS • “First mile” connectivity • Star topology • Connection to > 10.000 SIT’s • Scalable to your rate of growth • SATELLITE • Secure • Fully Redundant • Easy to deploy & install • PRIVATE NETWORK (not VIRTUAL PN) • Scalable • Cost effective

  5. WHY DVB-RCS?

  6. Driver for success: Demand for Business Access Is Evident Corporate & SME Survey • 50 percent want to increase their connection capacity • 67 percent of narrowband users are interested in broadband • Of these, 52 percent want to subscribe to broadband • Of which 66 percent within six months 80 67% 66% 70 60 52% 50% 50 44% 40 30 20 10 0 Security, firewall Increase capacity NB interest in BB Subscribe to BB Within 6 months Alcatel-AT Kearney 2002

  7. Driver for success: Demand for Value-Added Services (VAS) Beyond access: more than 50 percent of Corporates and SMEs are interested in at least one VAS 80 70 Probably 70 Certainly 60 26 50 41 41 Percent 40 34 33 30 24 26 23 22 44 20 10 17 15 11 11 0 Security Web hosting IP-VPN Intranet/extranet VoIP Alcatel-AT Kearney 2002

  8. BUT.....Terrestrial connectivity is lacking Market panorama - Filling the broadband access gap • Satellite complementary with terrestrial • Offer “Satellite BB” to customers who live in areas where DSL service cannot be provided • DSLAM equipped COs will cover ~75% of GB population, and in each CO zone ~75% of users will not be able to receive ADSL at all  56 % of population coverage by ADSL

  9. There goes the myth “developped countries”..... • Satellite provides an advantage over terrestrial networks • short service delivery time • Terrestrial access services require high CAPEX for upgrading • 50 users/sq. miles is minimum to justify CAPEX • Is this rural market big enough? 33% of households in US will NOT be served with terrestrial solutions

  10. There is a need for a Complete Solution addressing All the requirements of Business User • Use a single network to offer : • business Internet access • VAS: firewall, security, web hosting, ... • multiple voice lines • Multi-site teleworking • leased line replacement • Provide service assurance (SLAs) and QoS mechanisms for all these services • Provide service ANYTIME & ANYWHERE

  11. How to use DVB-RCS?

  12. TDM LL TDM LL FR FR Enterprise AccessLegacy Interfaces for Leased Lines (TDM/FR/Voice) Businesses NOC HUB ATM Key features • Support of all legacy interfaces • Put all traffic on same multiservice network • Interoperate with legacy networks • Optimize bandwidth utilization Key benefits • Reduce OpEx • Replace old equipment • Flexible bandwidth • Ready for future service requiring variable bandwidth and QoS, such as video applications
