Why is this lesson important? • Fits into Writer’s Workshop framework • Provides an opportunity for pre-assessment • Supports Vocabulary and language development • Meets standards • 2.6.5.6 – strengthening writing with guidance from adults and peers • 2.1.4.4 - Describe how words and phrases supply rhythm and meaning in a story, poem, or song “Poetry teaches children to have fun with words, to be daredevils and gymnasts with language, by seeing the world with fresh eyes.” ~Lucy Calkins

  4. What to Expect! • Mini lesson (10-15 minutes) Goal: I can see the world like a poet. • Guided Practice/Extended Practice (20 minutes) • Independent Practice/Conference (20 minutes) • Sharing/Closure (5-10 minutes)

  10. Extended Practice • Each table will receive a mystery bag. Try to see this item as a poet would see it, “in a fresh new way” • Each table will have 3 minutes(ish) to do the following (2nd graders would get about 10 minutes, and fewer objects). • Observe (looks like, sounds like, feels like) • Discuss with partner • WRITE (lists, phrases, sentences, poems . . .) ?

Independent Practice • About 10 minutes • add more ideas to create a poem you would want to share with a partner • Draw illustrations, sometimes illustrations can give us more to write about Reason: This is another opportunity for me to conference with students and ask them about their writing
