  4. The globe theatre Built in 1599 by Shakespeare’s theatre company The Lord Chamberlin’s Men Open Air theatre “Groundlings”—peasants who stood near the front of the stage; were subject to the dreary weather of England. Royalty and other merchants sat in the bandstands, which were covered.

  5. The Lord Chamberlain’s Men • Founded during the reign of Elizabeth I of England in 1594. • “Elizabethan” Language—particular style of the Shakespearean dialogue; Queen Elizabeth I was a supporter of the arts. • All actors were male; there were no female actors—men played the parts of women.
