History of School Gardens 1525 Botanical garden planted at an Italian University for educational purposes. 16th Century "A school garden should be connected with every school where children can have opportunities for leisurely gazing upon trees, flowers and herbs and are taught to enjoy them." -Comenius 17th Century School gardens spread throughout Europe.

  3. History of School Gardens 1869 Austria mandates that all schools must have school garden (followed by similar measures in Germany, Sweden, Belgium, France, Russia and England). 1890 First official US school garden at George Putnam School of Roxbury, Massachusetts for wildflowers and vegetables. 1897 Boy's Garden established by the National Cash Register Company to instill good work ethic.

Strategy Support partnership between industry and workforce training providers that offer skills training programs in emerging technology fields School Garden programs can be the first steps in introducing primary students to the practical application of science, mathematics, and entrepreneurship Relationships developed with community leaders, higher education, and industry can be foundation of further collaboration in secondary education

Growing the Delta and the DRA Objectives Goal 2 Strengthen the Delta’s physical and digital connections to the global economy Objective 2.1 Advance the iDelta initiative Strategy Enhance workforce development in the Delta by providing all adults access to training in computer literacy, workforce skills, and business practices such as e-commerce and entrepreneurship The Growing the Delta School Garden Program will introduce practical applications of research, electronic communication, and development of e-commerce and entrepreneurship

Strategies Support local-level grant research, writing, and administration training. Work to protect the region’s environmental assets Support the development and marketing of local entertainment, recreation, culture, and tourism assets Expand the application of green technologies in the region The Growing the Delta School Garden Program will include links and resources to educators to develop and expand Gardening projects giving exposure and experience in the grant writing process The projects will focus on environmental y friendly agriculture and green technology The program will embrace the agricultural heritage of each community while introducing twenty-first century skills in production and marketing

Strategies Support entrepreneur education, training, and support programs Support mentoring and networking events that bring together entrepreneurs, potential investors, and service providers The Growing the Delta School Garden Program will not only offer practical application of theory in cross curriculum education but will also foster entrepreneurship in students who will be encouraged to market a portion or their product and to donate a portion for the well-being of their community.

  12. Future of the Project Based on experiment at Tuskegee Institute Middle School, develop a resource kit to easy the process of implementation of a school garden and to ensure DRA goals are addressed

  13. Resource Kit Resource Kit will be contained on a USB Flash memory device in seed card themed packaging
