  1. Climate Change and the Coasts: Impacts on Coastal Communities • Presenters: • David M. Kennedy, Director, NOAA Office of Ocean & Coastal Resource Management • Margaret A. Davidson, Director, NOAA Coastal Services Center • May 20, 2009 1

  2. 57% of U.S. national GDP is contributed by coastal watershed counties. Coastal counties contain 53% of the Nation’s population – but account for only 17% of U.S. land area (excludes Alaska). Waterborne commerce along the Nation’s seaports is a $1 trillion industry supporting more than 13 million U.S. jobs. Coastal habitats help reduce impacts of floods, storms, and climate change on coastal communities by absorbing water, wave energy, and other stressors. Coastal Communities: VITAL TO U.S. AND INTERNATIONAL ECONOMIES Climate Change and the Coasts - May 20, 2009

  3. NOAA: Understanding Changing Climate For ClimateRisk Management NOAA’s tool box National Security and Economy Ecosystems and Biodiversity Climate Assessments, Products, and Services Energy Transportation Society Water Agriculture Coastal Systems Health Living Marine Resources Research and Understanding Observations Modeling Platforms: Satellites, ships, buoys, stations Geospatial mapping Earth System Models, Climate Predictions/Projections High Resolution Regional Models 3 Climate Change and the Coasts - May 20, 2009

  5. Coastal Coordination Committee Climate Working Group • Expressed Needs: • A Federal resource/tool box to support adaptation strategies at multiple scales • Enhanced coordination among Federal agencies • Guidance for developing State adaptation plans • A better understanding of State requirements NOAA’s Role in Climate Services, Adaptation, and Applications - February 23, 2009

  6. Climate Services for the Nation’s Coastal Communities Improving Awareness of Climate Change Risks: NOAA’s Climate Change Portal • A “one-stop” Web portal for discovery & delivery of NOAA’s climate information & resources • Improving Analytic Capacity: Integrated Ocean & Coastal Mapping/Digital Coast • Provides a coordinated approach to mapping/GIS & visualization tools to help users understand impacts of changing climate conditions • Example (Left) – data simulation of inundation on Charleston, SC • Implementing Adaptation Actions: NOAA’s Coastal Strategy • To increase the resilience of coastal environments and communities by protecting and restoring coastal ecosystems and their services and ensuring sustainable coastal communities.
