SFU: The Facts • Simon Fraser University is consistently ranked among Canada's top comprehensive universities and is one of the top 50 universities in the world under 50 years old. • Three campuses in Vancouver, Burnaby and Surrey, B.C. with 6500 staff. • SFU engages actively with the community in its research and teaching, delivers almost 150 programs to more than 30,000 students, and has more than 125,000 alumni in 130 countries.

IT Successes • Intensive consultation process with community • Enthusiastic adoption by SFU community • Meaningful academic community engagement • On time and within budget • Rapid 3 week upgrade schedule • Implemented mobile app in short timeframe • Support from other post-secondary institutions

  5. IT Challenges • Data conversion from WebCT course shells • FIPPA legislation restrictions on 3rdparty apps • Integration of mobile app into SFU Canvas • Resource constraints • Performance Issues • Project governance • Communication

  9. Pedagogical Successes (1) • Instructor support & training (LearnTech portal) • Manual migration of WebCT content • Multi-faceted functional support system • Ramp-up of local Canvas expertise

  10. Pedagogical Successes (2) • New features, LTI’s in response to community requests • Self service learning objects • Supporting other institutions adopting Canvas • Supported FoE move from Moodle and non-calendar courses

  11. Pedagogical Challenges (1) • More manual WebCT content migration than anticipated; more resources required • LearnTech portal: establishment of process • Resistance to adopting a new online teaching environment • Open source installation facing unique bugs & challenges not faced in the cloud

Pedagogical Challenges (2) • Provincial (FIPPA) legislation prevents use of US-based cloud services • Some tools from WebCT unavailable in Canvas further increasing resistance from legacy users • Student adoption rate higher than faculty adoption causing frustration by students • Tools like gradebook still unused • Courses disorganized • Instructors not embracing the online messaging system
