  2. Radioactivity Atoms are not all stable. The excess energy contained in an unstable atom is released in different ways.

  3. Alpha Particle • An alpha particle is a helium nucleus. • The heaviest radioactive particle • Cannot penetrate the skin • The least penetrating form of radioactivity

  4. Beta Particle • A beta particle is a high energy electron. • Travels at near the speed of light (faster than ordinary electrons) • Can penetrate the skin, causes a sunburn-like effect, but slower to heal.

  5. Gamma Radiation 00Ɣ • Gamma Radiation -- not made of particles • High energy electromagnetic waves • Travels at the speed of light • Similar to X-Rays, very penetrating
