  2. Can You Hear Me Now? Matthew 6:5-18

  3. Matthew 6:5–18 5“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. 7“And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11Give us this day our daily bread, 12and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 14For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 16“And when you fast, do not look gloomy like the hypocrites, for they disfigure their faces that their fasting may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 17But when you fast, anoint your head and wash your face, 18that your fasting may not be seen by others but by your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. Can You Hear Me Now?

  4. Matthew 6:5–18 9Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. 10Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11Give us this day our daily bread, 12and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.14For if you forgive others their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you, 15but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. Can You Hear Me Now?

  6. Talking To God • We can converse with God like we converse with any human being in that it is a two-way conversation. • Many words and formulas do not guarantee that God will do what we demand in our prayers. • Jesus gave us a Model Prayer to show us four areas that we can pray for God’s best in our lives.

  7. The Need to Forgive • During the Model Prayer, Jesus reminds us that one of our needs is to be forgiven and to forgive. • If we don’t forgive, we will explode! We must for our own spiritual health forgive others and be forgiven. • When forgiving others, we must remember that we contantly need God’s forgiveness because we make mistakes too!

  8. Fasting Rather Than Feasting • Fasting brings us into sharp contrast with the American feast extravaganza. • Fasting calls us not to be totally secretive in fasting, but to not boast about it or tell people for spiritual points. • Fasting is one of the most available ways to connect with God on a desperate level of devotion.

  9. Key of the Kingdom • Both prayer and fasting are expected of those who follow Jesus. “And WHEN you…” Jesus leaves no room for possibility but for probability. • In prayer, we seek to commune with God and increase our relationship with Him in intimacy. • In fasting, we seek to trust in God in a deeper level of commitment and devotion.
