  2. Division in the Catholic Church • Catholic Church splits • Pope Clement V wants to move the government of the Catholic Church • Rome, Italy to Avignon, France

French Popes • During the 1300’s we begin to see monarchs gain more power • Catholic Church must support the monarchs policies • 1305, the French King used his power to get Pope Clement V elected as pope • 1307, Clement moved the center of the church to Avignon, France • French King was seen in control

  4. Catholic Church Powers • Great Schism (split of the Catholic Church) • In 1378, both Rome and Avignon elect two different popes • Pope Urban VI (France) and Pope Clement VII (Rome) • Both popes demanded obedience or excommunicated • Created confusion in the church and doubt

  5. Healing the Church • To end the schism, the Holy Roman Emperor in 1414 summoned a conference to end the schism • Reform the church • Church officials removed the French Pope and persuaded the Roman Pope to resign • Pope Martin V would be elected as the new pope
