  2. Today you will develop an understanding of: • The history and guiding principles behind the development of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) • The timeline of California’s adoption process and implementation resources • Major foundational shifts in focus with the CCSS

  3. Setting the Stage: Why?Because SHIFT happens! How? …with an emphasis on 21st Century skills

  4. Who’s Plan is This? • Developed by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices and the Council of Chief State School Officers • Released on June, 2010 • August , 2010 California State Board of Education adopted the CCSS. • Spring 2013 Pilot testing of summative assessments (Smarter Balanced) • Spring 2014 Field testing of Smarter Balanced • Spring 2015 Administer operational Smarter Balanced

  6. What’s in the CCSS? • CCSS for English • Literacy Standards for all subjects/courses • CCSS for Math Built with a foundation for all courses with the College and Career Readiness Anchor Standards

  7. What About Accountability? • The shift in accountability : • The new measurement of student success for K-12… college going rates without the need for remediation. • CSU Executive Order 1048 (Early Start Program)… beginning in summer of 2012, incoming freshman who have not demonstrated proficiency, required to begin remediation prior to term of admission. • Higher Education Act (HEOA)… graduation and transfer rates for community colleges (only 29% who attend receive certificate, degree or transfer).

  8. What does it mean for us? Shifting classroom instruction toward a simple question: How do learning experiences develop students’ ability to solve real-world, standards-based problems using rigorous academic language and higher order skills with precision and accuracy? From role of K-12 education from accumulation of credits and passing the CAHSEE for high school graduation… College-going rates w/o need for remediation… from standards proficiency to preparedness for the next level of learning.
