  2. What is the Hook? • The hook is the first sentence in your essay. • The purpose of the hook is to capture your reader’s attention.

  3. What NOT to Do . . . • Don’t start with your thesis statement. You should lead up to it. • Don’t be generic like the examples below: *Today, I am going to write about my favorite show. *Spongebob is a great show. *I love Spongebob.

  4. BORING! Come on! You can do better than that! Hook your readers. Give your essay some PIZAZZ!

  5. 8 Types of Hooks • Question • Quote • Onomatopoeia • Poem • Song • Interjection • Startling Statistic • Dialogue Not all hooks are appropriate for every essay. Choose wisely!

  6. Question When writing a question, try to create a picture in the reader’s mind. Use the words who, what, when, where, why, is, how, or are at the beginning of the sentence. • Where in the Pacific Ocean can you find a delicious Krabby Patty to eat, live in a pineapple, and drive in an underwater boat? Bikini Bottom, of course!

  7. Quote When writing a quote, it can be a direct quotation from a book, TV show, movie, or a famous person. "Do you smell that? That smell--It's the smell of a smelly smell that smells smelly," stated Spongebob from the show Spongebob Squarepants. 

  8. Onomatopoeia Onomatopoeia is a word that makes sounds. Those can be animal sounds, car sounds, or any other sound. Examples include: Bang! Woof! or Cock-a-doodle-doo! "Meooowww!" said Gary, Spongebob's pet snail. 

  9. Poem Use a poem from a famous author, or make up your own.  Roses are red, violets are blue. I love Spongebob Squarepants, do you?

  10. Song Use a line or two from your favorite song on the radio. Make sure you relate it to your essay. "Are ya ready kids? Aye, aye, Captain. I can't hear you! Aye, aye Captain. Ohhhh!" My favorite TV show started to play on Nickelodeon.

  11. Interjections Interjections express emotions. Examples are Aha!, Stop!, Ugh!, Help!, Well!, YOW!, Brrrr!, Yummy! "Noooo!" Don't touch the TV, I am watching my favorite show, Spongebob Squarepants. 

  12. Startling Statistic Statistics show relationships with numbers. Find a surprising statistic involving your topic. Remember to cite your source! Over 1 million adults and children worldwide tune in to watch the TV show, “Spongebob Squarepants,” on a weekly basis.

  13. Dialogue Dialogue features two or more people talking. Remember to punctuation correctly! "There's nothing wrong with getting kissies from your grandmother," said Spongebob. "No, especially if you're a big baby who wears diapers!" responded Fish. 

  14. Practice • Visualize your favorite television show, book, movie, comic book, etc. • Pretend you are writing an essay about your choice, and create a hook for each type discussed in this presentation. Make up the statistic if you do not have access to resources at this point.
