  2. What are the current realities in education? • Most students with diverse needs are in inclusive classrooms • Learning disabilities such as dyslexia • English language barriers • Emotional or behavioral problems • Lack of interest or engagement • Sensory, physical, and cognitive disabilities

  5. In the diverse classroom…. • Each student brings his or her own level abilities, background knowledge, readiness, language, preferences in learning, and interests

Understanding UDL • Drawing on brain research, the UDL framework aims toward providing three kinds of flexibility • Multiple means of representation, to give learners various ways of acquiring information and knowledge • Multiple means of expression, to provide learners alternatives for demonstrating what they know • Multiple means of engagement, to tap into learners' interests

  11. Implications of UDL • UDL has the potential to improve the outcomes for “all learners” though the use of flexible learning materials

  12. Next Steps • Make a personal commitment to learn more about UDL at sites like www.ocali.org • Send a team to participate in the OCALI/SST-9 sponsored UDL training • Trainers Jeff McCormick and Ron Rogers from OCALI will be doing the training

  13. Next Steps Train the trainer model • First cohort will be spring at Ashland Stark Year 1 - March 8, March 22 and May 10 2013 Year 2- fall 2013 • Second cohort will be scheduled for fall 2013
