  1. Post-mortem of Experience with LEIR Controls Sergio Pasinelli on behalf of the LEIR commissioning team

  2. Outlines • Introduction • Generalities • Needs • Schedules • Status in 2005 • Request for 2006 • Conclusions S. Pasinelli

  3. The Deal • From CO: To test and validate, in an operational environment, certain choices suggested for the control of the LHC • From OP: The new tools will have to provide the same functionalities, availability and reliability which are currently proposed by the CPS. S. Pasinelli

  4. Description • LEIR is between LINAC 3 and the PS. • The Control system of the LINAC 3 and PS, is that of the CPS • LEIR is a hybrid control system, composed of elements from the CPS and LHC S. Pasinelli

  5. We are Here S. Pasinelli

  6. Control needs for commissioning • Sequencing / Timing • Basic controls (WS + Knobs) • Observation & Instrumentation • Function editor / Cycle editor (LSA) • Tools • Alarms • Archives / References S. Pasinelli

  7. DSC Structure for the commissioning CBCM Working set & Knobs Cycle & Function Editor Observations & Instrumentations Tools Alarms Passerelle Archives & Ref. Application Server (if necessary) Middleware GM FESA LEIR Equipments S. Pasinelli

  8. Schedule • Hardware Commissioning : Basic control & Sequencing available at the beginning of May • Beam injection : Partial Controls & Observation of the injection lines available at the beginning of June. • Ring : Full Controls & Observation available at the beginning of August. • Ejection : Control available at the beginning of February 2006. S. Pasinelli

  9. Status Hardware Commissioning (May) Controls with Xmotif/C++ • Console manager On time • Working set / Knobs On time • Function editor On time • Alarms On time • FE software GM On time • CBCM On time S. Pasinelli

  10. Status Hardware Commissioning (May) Controls with Java • CCM Debugging • Working set / Knobs NOT READY • FE Framework FESA NOT READY • LTIM On time • POWDF7000 NOT READY • Reboot DSC NOT READY S. Pasinelli

  11. Status Injection (June) Controls with Java • MTV On time • CCM Debugging • OASIS Hard Debugging • Working set / Knobs NOT READY • Alarms (LASER) NOT READY • Workstation memory leak 1GB not enough S. Pasinelli

  12. Status Injection (June) • FE Framework FESA NOT READY • POWDF7000 NOT READY • BTV On time • Reboot DSC NOT READY S. Pasinelli

  13. Status Ring (September) Controls with Java • CCM • WS memory leakIncrease memory to 2GB • Orbit correctionOn time • Working set / KnobsDebugging • Alarms (LASER)Partial • OASIS Debugging • Cycle editor (LSA)Debugging • ReferencesNOT READY • ArchivesNOT READY S. Pasinelli

  15. Status end 2005 Controls with Java • CCM • WS memory leak • Working set / Knobs • Orbit correction • References • OASIS Optimization • Cycle editor (LSA) Optimization & GUI • Alarms (LASER) Partial S. Pasinelli

  16. Status end 2005 Controls with Java (con’t) • ArchivesNOT READY • PPM CopyPartial only for GM • EQP SurveyNOT READY • PasserellePartial only for GM • FE Framework FESA • FESA Classes • POWDF7000 • Septa • Semgrid PLC • Orbit S. Pasinelli

  17. Objectives 2006 • Controls with Java • Cycle editor (LSA) Optimization • Archives Ready • Alarms Full functionalities • PPM Copy For GM and FESA • Passerelle For GM and FESA • OASIS Improve speed connection • EQP Survey Ready • Cycle editor (LSA) GUI improvement S. Pasinelli

  18. Conclusions • Use of LHC controls for LEIR very ambitious • Schedules not respected • Many softwares not ready • Communication lack between CO projects • The CO priorities for LEIR softwares to low • CO effort for LEIR in autumn • Tests TI8 and TT40 was not enough for LEIR S. Pasinelli

  19. Conclusions • There can be an inconsistency between the supercycle from “Cycle Editor" and from the MTG with the long plateau • CPS & CSL knowledge used in the LEIR softwares • Excellent support and reactivity from softwares developers • The effort must continue, the commisionning is not finished! S. Pasinelli

  20. Conclusions A Control system allowing working (but not yet perfect) is available S. Pasinelli

  21. Acknowledgements • Thanks to all people involved in the LEIR softwares. • Specially • E. Roux, I. Kozsar, M. Pace, V. Baggiolini • CO Team • LSA Team • BDI Team • PO Team • Vacuum Team • OP Team S. Pasinelli
