  2. In order to understand leadership, we must first dispel some myths. Exit

  3. The Management Myth • Until recently, most thought management and leadership were the same thing. • Management focuses on maintaining systems and processes. • Management can maintain direction, but it can’t start or change direction. Exit

  4. To move people in a new direction, you need leadership. • Leadership is about influencing people to follow and to change. • Organizations need both management and leadership. Exit

  8. The Entrepreneur Myth • We assume entrepreneurs and sales people are good leaders. • People may buy what they sell, but nobody is usually following them. • At best the entrepreneur is able to persuade for the moment. • They hold no long-term influence over anyone. Exit

  9. The Knowledge Myth • Sir Francis Bacon said, “Knowledge is power.” • Many people believe that those who possess knowledge are leaders. • You can visit any university and meet intelligent faculty who cannot lead. Exit

  10. The Pioneer Myth • Are you leading if you are in front of the crowd? • Being first or in the front is not leading. • To be a leader people have to voluntarily follow you. Exit

  11. The Position Myth • Some think leadership is based on position. • Position does not make a leader, the leader makes the position. • You can lose your position and still lead informally. Exit

  12. The Work Harder Myth • Some think that anyone can be a good leader if they work hard enough. • More work effort is not the answer. We only have a finite amount of energy. • It is about working smarter, not harder. Exit

  13. Leaders Are Born, Not Made Myth • Leaders are made. • Innate characteristics can add to an individual’s ability to lead. • Life experiences can greatly influence leadership potential. Exit

  16. Influence is the beginning & ending points of leadership. • It is the softer & gentler side of leadership. • It is setting power & force aside. • Good leaders move the movable & insist that the immovable make a decision. • You cannot force people to participate. Exit

  22. Good Leaders Are Also Concerned With Their Return On Investment (R.O.I.) • Are you investing in your area of concern & getting little return? • Are you investing in your area of influence & maximizing your return? Exit

  24. High • People follow you because of what you represent. • People follow you because they want to. • People follow you because of what you have done for them. • People follow you because they have to. Influence Low Exit

  29. Leadership is not a product; it is a process. • It develops daily, not in a day. • Leadership is like investing: You cannot make a fortune in a day. • Organizations need to invest in leadership and let their assets compound. Exit

  31. 1. We Must Learn What We Do Not Know. • The process cannot start until you know what you do not know. • Be conscious of your leadership ignorance. • You cannot lead tomorrow without learning today. Exit

  33. 2. Practice, Practice, Practice... • Daily practice will make leading automatic and intuitive. • Larry Bird would shoot 500 free-throws a day. • Leadership ability is not static or innate; it improves with practice. • Leadership is a never-ending process that takes a lifetime. Exit
