  3. Previous Wireless Network • Nurses and Doctors had been using the organization’s conventional computer network to record and track patient information. • Vital statistics and medication history had to be entered by hand, then typed into the computer system at nurses’ stations.

  4. Disadvantages • Retyping errors • Difficulty quickly entering information • Difficulty quickly accessing information • Information was needed in the patients room to assess progress and determine treatment.

  5. New System and Software • Florida Hospital deployed a mobile patient care work cart and application. • Laptops on specially designed, adjustable carts with electrical outlets and cords. • Application covers three areas of patient information: intravenous (IV) administration history, vital statistics, and x-ray and lab reports.

  6. Carts unite supplies, meds, IT for better bedside care Today’s healthcare carts and computer workstations are smarter than ever. They look smart, with sleek, stylish and ergonomic designs.

  7. Expanding Wireless Network • To make the carts effective they needed to upgrade their wireless network • Previously they had been using a proprietary wireless system • The system had become out-of date, because of rapid advances in wireless technology standards.

  8. Challenges of Expanding • Lead-lined walls of X-ray rooms- block any radio signals from passing through. • Wireless signals must negotiate a phalanx of interference from wired medical devices.

  9. Importance of Security • Sensitivity of medical records • Government regulations such as the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 • Requirement of specific privacy and security safeguards

  10. Solution to Security • To ensure the security of its wireless LAN, Florida Hospital has deployed advanced access point detection

  11. Positive Results • 14670 total users currently access the wireless network. • 700 wireless laptops are currently deployed across 7 campuses for clinical purposes, and multiple highly integrated clinical applications are in use throughout the environment.

  12. Positive Results cont. • Thanks to the workflow advantages provided by the wireless technology, the quality of patient care has improved by allowing and facilitating more time for the clinician to be at the bedside
