  1. Mission of ACMA Resin Loss Control Committee The Mission of the ACMA Resin Loss Control Committee is to improve personnel safety, process safety management, fire protection, product safety support, release prevention, and emergency response for companies in the Resin and Gel Coat supply chain. This will be accomplished by sharing non-proprietary information pertaining to these areas of interest. The members will share practice options, review case history of incidents, and work cooperatively on projects that advance industry knowledge and control of these risks.

  2. Mission of the ACMA Resin Loss Control Committee • Areas of Concern • Personnel safety • Process safety (Process Safety Management - PSM) • Fire protection • Product safety support • Release prevention • Emergency response • Sharing non-proprietary information pertaining to these areas of interest. • Practice options (Best Practices) • Review case history of incidents • Work cooperatively on projects that advance industry knowledge and control of these risks

  3. Current Project • Guidelines for exothermic reaction of bulk or drum shipments. • Detection – How to determine there is a problem? • Safety concerns • PPE – How to protect yourself? • Containment – How to keep it from spreading? • Mitigation – What can we do? • Clean Up – How to clean up the mess? • Paperwork – Reporting • Incident investigation and follow up.

  4. Exothermic Reaction of Bulk or Drum Shipments • Detection – How to determine there is a problem? • Odor – We all know what it smells like. • Heat – Hot to the touch, thermal imaging • Relief – Drum bungs, tanker relief valve, hatch • Distortion • Call environmental manager/plant manager/etc.

  5. Exothermic Reaction of Bulk or Drum Shipments • Safety • Call 911 as needed • Evacuate as needed • Keep non-responding personnel away • Wear proper PPE • Monitor LEL • Fire protection / fire extinguishers • Training

  6. Exothermic Reaction of Bulk or Drum Shipments • PPE • Respirator • Face shield • Gloves • FR clothing • Insulating clothes • Boots

  7. Exothermic Reaction of Bulk or Drum Shipments • Containment • Oil dry • Curbing • Earth • Absorbent booms • Over pack drum • Barrier tape - Isolate the spill

  8. Exothermic Reaction of Bulk or Drum Shipments • Mitigation • Move drum to safe location outside if safely possible • Inhibitor • Cooling • Monitor the reaction (don’t leave it unattended) • LEL

  9. Exothermic Reaction of Bulk or Drum Shipments • Clean Up • Wait until reaction is over and cooled. • Oil dry absorbents • Spark proof tools • Over pack drums • Contain any contaminated soil, water , absorbents, etc. • Understand disposal options • Paperwork (disposal manifest) • Contractors

  10. Exothermic Reaction of Bulk or Drum Shipments • Paperwork • CERCLA reporting requirements • Reportable quantity offsite (air, water or land) • Call NRC within 24 hours if over RQ • NRC report as required. • Incident investigation • Disposal manifest • Close the loop on all open items
