  1. Next Generation Science Standards Cannon

  2. Why The NGSS Were Developed • 15 years since last revision. Much has changed in science, science education and in the economy) • We need new science standards that stimulate and build interest in STEM. • We can’t successfully prepare students for college, careers and citizenship unless we set the right expectations and goals. • To better prepare high school graduates for the rigors of college and careers.

  3. What are the NGSS? • K–12 science standards created through a collaborative state-led process. • Arranged in a coherent manner across grades • Based on the Framework for K–12 Science Education, developed by the National Research Council, the staffing arm of the National Academy of Sciences. • Three prongs: content, scientific and engineering practices and cross-cutting concepts. • The integration of rigorous content and application reflects how science is practiced in the real world.

  4. How Were the NGSS Developed? • Step One: • Development of the Framework for K–12 Science Education by the National Academies of Science • Identified the broad ideas and practices in natural sciences and engineering that all students should be familiar with by graduation • Step Two: • Standards developed based on the Framework • Included two open comment periods

  5. What About NJ? • Current standards were adopted in NJ in 2009 • Current requirements: 15 credits in science (Biology, Environmental Science or Physics, Chemistry, another lab-based course) • ASK assesses science in grades 4 + 8 • Biology Competency Test assesses biology students • Next scheduled review is “as needed” in 2014 (adoption of the NGSS may qualify as such)
