  1. Adding Fractions Arrrr ya ready?!?!

  2. Adding Like Denominators Only add the numerators 1/4 1/4 3 1 4 + = 4 4 4 1/4 1/4 1 =

  3. Add these fractions 1/5 1/5 3 1 4 + = 1/5 5 5 5 1/5

  4. Add these fractions 1/4 1/4 2 1 3 + = 4 4 4 1/4

  5. Add these fractions 1 1 1 6 6 6 3 2 5 + = 6 6 6 1 1 6 6

  6. Add these fractions 1 1 1 1 6 6 6 6 2 2 4 2 2 + = ÷ = 6 6 6 2 3 ALWAYS SIMPLIFY YOUR ANSWER!

  7. Add these fractions 8 4 2 5 3 + = ÷ = 4 3 12 12 12 SIMPLIFY!!!

  8. Add these fractions 4 2 2 1 3 + = ÷ = 2 5 10 10 10 WOO WOO!!!!!

  9. Adding Unlike Denominators **Find a common denominator** Check to see if the smaller denominator divides evenly into the larger denominator. If it does, use the larger denominator. For example: 1 3 will divide evenly into 9, so 9 is your common denominator. 3 1 + 9

  10. To Add Fractions With Unlike Denominators • Rewrite the fractions using a common denominator. 1 5 10 1 + 10 10

  11. To Add Fractions With Unlike Denominators • Find the equivalent fractions with 10 as the denominator. To find the top number, ask yourself what do you multiply the 5 by to get 10? 1 5 10 1 + 10 10

  12. To Add Fractions With Unlike Denominators • Find the equivalent fractions with 10 as the denominator. Whatever you multiply the denominator by, you must also multiply by the numerator! 1 x 2 = 5 10 x 2 = 1 + 10 10

  13. To Add Fractions With Unlike Denominators • Find the equivalent fractions with 10 as the denominator. To find the top number just multiply 2 x 1 to get your equivalent fraction. 1 2 x 2 = 5 10 x 2 = 1 + 10 10

  14. To Add Fractions With Unlike Denominators • Find the equivalent fractions with 10 as the denominator. 1 2 What do you multiply the 10 by to get 10?? x 2 = 5 10 x 2 = 1 x 1 = 1 + 10 x 1= 10

  15. To Add Fractions With Unlike Denominators • Now just add the numerators. 1 2 x 2 = Remember when adding fractions you never add the denominators. 5 10 x 2 = x 1 = 1 1 + 10 10 x 1 = 3 10

  16. Add these Fractions Use the short cut to find a common denominator. 1 2 8 1 + 8 8

  17. Add these Fractions Now find equivalent fractions. 1 2 8 x 4 = 1 + 8 8 x 1 = What do you multiply 2 by to get 8? What do you multiply 8 by to get 8?

  18. Add these Fractions Since you are writing equivalent fractions, now multiply the numerators by the same number you did in the denominators. 1 x 4 = 2 8 x 4 = 1 x 1 = + 8 x 1 = 8

  19. Add these Fractions 1 4 Now multiply across. x 4 = 2 8 x 4 = 1 1 x 1 = + 8 x 1 = 8

  20. Add these Fractions 1 4 Add your new numerators. x 4 = 2 8 x 4 = 1 1 x 1 = + 8 x 1 = 8 5 8

  21. Arrrrgg matey! These young’ins think they arrr smarrrt. Let’s see if they can handle this one….arrgg!!

  22. Add these Fractions Find a common denominator by finding the LCM of 5 and 3. 2 5 15 1 + 3 15

  23. Add these Fractions Ask yourself what you multiply the denominator by to get 15. 2 5 15 x 3 = 1 + 3 15 x 5 =

  24. Add these Fractions Multiply the numerator by the same number you did in the bottom. 2 x 3 = 5 15 x 3 = 1 x 5 = + 3 x 5 = 15

  25. Add these Fractions Multiply across. 2 6 x 3 = 5 15 x 3 = 1 5 x 5 = + 3 15 x 5 =

  26. Add these Fractions Now add your new numerators. 2 6 x 3 = 5 15 x 3 = 1 5 x 5 = + 3 15 x 5 = 11 15

  27. DRATS!!!! These young’ins are smarty pants. We are really gonna have to stump ‘em now……

  28. Add these Fractions 1 2 x 2 = 6 12 x 2 = 1 3 x 3 = + 4 x 3 = 12 5 12

  29. ARGG!!!! How did you get so smart?? You must have one awesome teacher…. 

  30. Add these Fractions 2 6 x 3 = 3 9 x 3 = 1 1 x 1 = + 9 x 1 = 9 7 9

  31. AYE! That was an easy one!!!! Here’s a tough one fer ya…..

  32. Add these Fractions 5 20 x 4 = 6 24 x 4 = 3 9 x 3 = + 8 x 3 = 24 29 24

  33. Simplify Your Answer 5 1 24 29 24) 29 24 24 5

  34. Ahoy! Did that one get ya?? Try one more………

  35. Add these Fractions 4 12 x 3 = 5 15 x 3 = 2 10 x 5 = + 3 x 5 = 15 22 15

  36. Simplify Your Answer 7 1 15 22 15) 22 15 15 7

  37. Aye, you kiddos are too smart fer me. Good luck on yer assignment… WS C-39!! but first.....
