Read “Colonialism and Independence” on page 217 to answer the following questions: ~How did Hernando Cortes change Mexico? ~What did Spain gain from Mexico? Label it on the picture. 2. Read page 219 to find the definition of mestizo. 3. Look on page 136 to define the Columbian Exchange. 4.   3. 1. Read Colony and Country on page 216-217 to answer the following questions: ~When did Mexico gain independence from Spain? Who ruled as emperor? ~What did Benito Juarez do for Mexico? How did he try to help Mexico? (Focus on the land) 2. Read Caribbean Independence on page 224. Write a summary of the slave revolt that led to independence of Haiti. 3. Read Independence Movements on page 231. How did Simon Bolivar and Jose De San Martin change the history of South America? 4. Read Independence for Brazil on page 237. How did its independence movement differ from others in South America? 5. Compare the Independence movements in Latin America to the United States. Create a Venn diagram showing their similarities and differences. Include at least 3 similarities and differences.

Latin America Mural • Create a mural showing the impact of colonization and revolution on Latin America. • Your mural must includeimages to represent 4 of the following terms • Colonialism • Indigenous Peoples (Native Americans) • Slavery • Colombian Exchange • Conquistador • Revolution • Be colored using at least 3 colors • Completely cover the page with no white spaces.
